La corteza de cuachalalate (Amphimpterygium adstringens Schiede ex Schlecht), es utilizada con gran intensidad en varias partes del país para curar más de treinta enfermedades. En el Edo. de Morelos, se realiza el descortezamiento sin control, desconociéndose hasta el momento los efectos fisiológicos sobre el árbol y si la nueva corteza presenta la misma eficiencia medicinal. En este estudio se determinó si existe efecto del diámetro en la capacidad de regeneración en grosor y lateral de corteza así como el efecto de tres magnitudes de daño al cambium vascular en la velocidad de regeneración lateral de corteza.
El cuachalalate, (Amphipterigium adstringens), es una especie arbórea de la selva baja caducifolia, cuya corteza se utiliza desde tiempos prehispánicos en la medicina tradicional. Por ser uno de los productos de mayor demanda en la herbolaria mexicana y de importancia económica para las comunidades que viven en este ecosistema, en el INIFAP desde 1989 se han realizado investigaciones para mejorar su manejo lo que permite actualmente su aprovechamiento sustentable y legal. Sin embargo, el proceso de distribución aún no se había abordado, por eso se llevó a cabo el presente estudio, cuyo objetivo fue identificar las zonas de abastecimiento, las rutas de comercialización, los agentes que intervienen en la cadena de producción y los márgenes de ganancia entre eslabones. Para lograrlo, se hicieron observaciones de campo y una serie de entrevistas. Los resultados indican que las principales áreas oferentes de corteza son el estado de Morelos, la Mixteca Poblana y el norte de la cuenca del río Balsas; con una recolección promedio de 57.5 toneladas al año. Se detectaron cinco canales de comercialización ,y en todos ellos el recolector recibe la porción más pequeña del precio final. El porcentaje que corresponde a los acopiadores varía entre 6 y 33%. El margen del detallista de 20 a 97%, el cual es mayor cuando el número de intermediarios disminuye y el producto se procesa. Si la corteza se envasa, los responsables reciben 70% del precio final; mientras que los laboratorios obtienen 73%, aunque sus costos son más altos.
