Learning style has been considered as one of determining factors for learning processes. This study aimed at observing the correlation between students’ learning style and performance of Nigerian students in biology. The sample of this study consisted of 100 students which were randomly selected from the secondary schools in Ifelodun LGA, Kwara State, Nigeria. The two validated instrument used for data collection were Grasha & Reichmann’s Student Learning Scale and VAK/VARK Learning Style. The data gained were analyzed using percentage, Pearson correlation, and Chi-Square test. The study findings indicated that: (i) there was a negative correlation between students’ academic performance and visual (-0.061) and kinesthetic learning style (-0.50), as well as positive correlation between the performance and auditory learning style (0.108). (ii) There were no significant differences between the study of learning styles, either visual (t(99) = 1.60, p = 0.11), auditory (t(99) = 1.33, p = 0.18), or kinesthetic (t(99) = 0.59, p = 0.55), of male and female biology students’ performance. Thus, it is suggested that teachers choose the most proper learning methods which accommodate the students’ need based on their learning styles.
The study was carried out on the availability of laboratory facilities in teaching of Basic Science on the Students’ academic performance in Upper Basic Schools, Kwara State, Nigeria. This target population for the study was all Basic Science Teachers in Kwara State, Nigeria, four hundred and sixty-nine (469) Public Upper Basic Schools and three hundred and sixty two (362) private schools are available in the study area. The researcher designed teachers' questionnaire and was administered to two hundred and thirty six (236) Basic science teachers that were selected from forty-seven Upper Basic Schools (47) from both public and private schools in Kwara State. Researcher-designed validated questionnaire was used to extract data from the respondents on the teachers 'influence on the performance of students in Upper Basic Schools. Three research questions were raised with two hypotheses which were tested. Percentage and t-test statistics were used to analyze the facts collected. The finding showed that influence of Basic science teachers on the performance of students in Upper Basic Schools in Kwara State, Nigeria was significantly. It was also significant based on gender and on year teaching experience of Basic science teachers. According to the findings, it is suggested that; the educational authorities and the school system should encourage the use of available resources by providing for them, the necessary materials that will influence Basic Science performance and enhance students learning. Basic Science teachers should re-assess their classroom instructional practice because there is a need for them to shift from instructional practice that will give the male and female teachers’ equal opportunities to excel in instructional activities. The less-experienced Basic Science teachers should be allowed for cognate experience and help encourage the experience to acquire more experience.
Instructional resources play an important role in conducting high quality education. This research assessed the availability and utilization of instructional resources in Moro Local Government Area (LGA) of Kwara State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research was adopted for the study. A total of sixty (60) Biology teachers were randomly sampled from eighteen (18) schools in Moro Local Government Area Kwara State. Three research questions and two hypotheses guided this study. Questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection and the data was analysed using simple percentage, ANOVA and t-test. The results of the study revealed that instructional resources for teaching Biology were not available in most senior secondary schools in Moro LGA of Kwara State. As high as 51% Biology teachers’ ultilized available instructional resources. Teachers’ academic qualification significantly influences their use of instructional resources for teaching Biology and there was no significant influence of school type in the use of instructional resources in teaching Biology. Recommendations made were that the government should provide more equipment for the schools for effective teaching and learning Biology, teachers should be encouraged to use Biology laboratory equipment, and in-service teachers training should be encouraged to improve their qualification.
The low learning outcomes of students caused by the underutilization of science laboratory facilities in some Kwara State Upper Basic Schools need to reveal. Thus, this research aimed 1) to analyze the effect of science laboratory utilization by the teachers and their experience on the students' learning outcomes, 2) to analyze the effect of science laboratory utilization by male and female teachers on the students learning outcomes, and 3) to analyze the effect of science laboratory utilization by experienced teachers to the students' learning outcomes. It is ex post facto research with multiple linear regression analysis due to its two independent variables. This research took both public and private upper primary school teachers in Kwara State, Nigeria, as the population. Forty-seven Public and Private Upper Basic Schools in all parts of the state are taken as samples randomly in this research. There were 100 basic science teachers taken as respondents. This research reported that 1) teachers’ utilization of science laboratory based on gender and experience in teaching science simultaneously influence students' learning outcomes with value Sig. 0,00 < 0,05, 2) the utilization of the science laboratory by the male and female teachers did not significantly influence the students' learning outcomes, with value Sig. Equal variances assumed 0,017 < 0,05, and 3) the utilization of a science laboratory by experienced teachers in teaching basic science significantly influenced one student’s learning outcomes.
High achievement especially in Biology is usually enhanced by proper Biology laboratory practical. However, it is assumed that most Biology teachers resort strictly to the use of theoretical method in teaching. This has constantly led to poor performance of students in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination across Nigeria. Therefore, this study investigated the statistical analysis on influence of Biology laboratory practical on students’ academic performance of Senior Secondary Students in Ilorin East, Kwara State, Nigeria. The study was a descriptive survey type. One hundred and twenty (120) students were sampled for the study using proportionate and simple random sampling technique in Ilorin East L.G.A, Kwara State, Nigeria. A researched designed questionnaire was used to accumulate information from respondents. Three research questions and two research hypotheses formulated were tested using percentage, mean, frequency count and independent t. test and ANOVA at 0.05alpha level of significant. The result of findings revealed that Biology laboratory practical has a great influence on senior secondary school students' academic performance and also on the level of understanding and retention capabilities of students but there was no significant influence of Biology laboratory practical on students’ academic performance based on gender but not was significant based on class size
