Sur la base d’une comparaison des relations liant les Kasua et les modernes aux plantes de la forêt néoguinéenne, cet article lève le voile sur l’angle mort ontologique dans lequel disparait brutalement, violemment et systématiquement, tout un pan des interactions liant les Kasua aux plantes, et qui ressortent de la communication interspécifique qu’ils entretiennent avec elles. Cet angle mort que l’auteure qualifie de « vide ontologique » agit comme un couperet sur leur ethnographie, comme un obstacle épistémologique qui s’applique non seulement à la phénoménologie kasua mais à tous les savoir-vivre non modernes.
L’article, issu d’une collaboration entre une primatologue et une ethnologue, livre un regard croisé et comparé des usages des plantes forestières parmi lesquelles puisent les populations humaines et chimpanzées dans la forêt tropicale du parc Kibale, en Ouganda. Les données ethno/étho botaniques recueillies au cours de leur terrain respectif légitiment la mise en regard des résultats et interrogent la possibilité d’une genèse interspécifique des manières d’être avec les plantes et des savoirs pharmacologiques qui en découlent chez ces deux populations.
Avant d'introduire les contributions de ce numéro, nous faisons un bref tour d'horizon des approches et méthodologies pouvant faire fi d'une compréhension du végétal en anthropologie de manière générale et nous y employons ensuite selon trois grands déploiements : en l'occurrence la dissolution de l'ethnobotanique, le tournant ontologique versus le tournant des plantes et le déplacement de l'arborescence au rhizome. Présences ou absences des plantesQuoi qu'il en soit, ces créatures et plantes vivent ensemble dans une combinaison de compétition et de dépendance mutuelle, et c'est cette combinaison qui est la chose importante à considérer. Bateson 1972 : 430 [notre traduction] De manière générale, le végétal peuple les écrits anthropologiques de fond en comble depuis le classique Coral Gardens and Their Magic (1935) de Bronislaw Malinowski jusqu'à How Forests Think (2013) de Eduardo Kohn, en passant par La pensée sauvage (1962) de Claude Lévi-Strauss, The Forest of Symbols (1967) de Victor Turner et Visionary Vine (1972) de Marlene Dobkin de Rios, pour n'en nommer que quelques-uns. Nonobstant leur omniprésence, il est souvent noté que les plantes passent largement inaperçues dans la littérature anthropologique. Diana Gibson (2018) note que cet aveuglement à l'égard des plantes se remarque par une absence de méthodes pour en tenir compte. Le végétal serait par ailleurs devenu un joueur clé dans le cadre de l'émergence de ce que S. Eben Kirksey et Stefen Helmreich (2010) appellent une « ethnographie multiespèce ». « L'animal, la plante, le champignon et les microbes à un certain moment confiné, dans les écrits anthropologiques, au domaine de la zoé ou 'vie nue' -ce qui est tuable -commencent à apparaitre aux côtés de l'humain dans le domaine du bios, avec des vies biographiques et politiques lisibles (Agamben 1997, dans Kirksey et Helmreich 2010 : 545 [notre traduction]). Nonobstant cette 4 inversion, l'aveuglement perçu par rapport aux plantes en anthropologie fait par ailleurs peut-être justement allusion aux manières subtiles et souples qu'ont les plantes de résonner à travers nous, le végétal pouvant néanmoins transformer profondément à la fois théorie et méthode. Les approches de Colin M. Turnbull dans The Forest People (1961), ou encore de Steven Feld dans Sound and Sentiment (1990), sont notables à cet égard alors qu'elles font résonner la forêt

Cette description permet de mettre en valeur la manière dont la société kasua structure schématiquement les expériences au monde et les oriente vers un relationnement de type animiste.
