Resumo Este artigo trata das relações entre pessoas, terras e espíritos na região de Jacmel, sul do Haiti. Esses espíritos, conhecidos como lwa e relacionados ao vodu haitiano, constroem suas existências a partir de uma relação profunda que mantêm com a terra onde habitam e, ao mesmo tempo, com os descendentes daquele que primeiro teria ocupado esta terra. Sendo parte de um legado familiar transmitido ao longo de sucessivas gerações, eles precisam ser cuidados e alimentados sob o risco de se tornarem agressivos, ameaçando a vida tanto dos seus herdeiros quanto a de seus familiares mais próximos. Tomando como base a reconstrução de certos acontecimentos que envolvem a relação entre um desses espíritos e a família de meus anfitriões, o texto busca recuperar sentimentos, opiniões, saberes e práticas em que os lwa são parte fundamental da experiência social das pessoas, atingindo-as diretamente e interferindo em seus destinos, independentemente das suas filiações religiosas.
Resumo Tomando como ponto de partida o projeto comparativo entre o Caribe e o Brasil, originalmente idealizado por Louis Herns Marcelin (1996), o artigo se articula em torno de dois eixos de reflexão. Primeiramente, busco estabelecer um diálogo entre a obra deste autor e algumas questões centrais nas etnografias sobre o Haiti e o Caribe, como a conjugalidade e a matrifocalidade. Procuro mostrar como o trabalho de Marcelin sobre parentesco e domesticidade entre as famílias das chamadas “classes populares” do Recôncavo Baiano é inovador não só porque coloca a casa no centro de suas análises, mas também por elaborar a noção de “configurações de casas”, atentando para sua dimensão relacional, assim como para a daqueles que as habitam. Num segundo momento, chamo a atenção para uma série de caminhos que as discussões presentes na tese do autor permitem explorar para além da casa: temas relativos ao sangue, à violência e à mobilidade das pessoas. Finalmente, o texto registra meu interesse atual e particular a respeito das relações entre casas (em sua acepção mais abrangente que compreende os lugares onde se vive ou de onde se é originário) e pessoas, assim como quanto ao potencial do sangue como veículo portador e transmissor de parentesco e de atributos morais.
Diferentes análises sobre o vodu haitiano apontam para o fato do termo vodou ser empregado para definir rituais que envolvem cantos, danças, tambores, comensalidade e movimentos e promovem a interação entre humanos e espíritos. Contudo, poucos(as) autores(as) exploraram a fundo esta definição, dedicando-se a enfatizar uma imagem estável do vodu. Politicamente, a criação dessa imagem possibilitou ao vodu adquirir o estatuto de religião nacional ganhando legitimidade e eficácia em disputas identitárias e territoriais das quais antropólogos(as) participam ativamente. Este artigo buscará aproximar dois contextos etnográficos de pesquisa realizadas em locais relativamente distantes, um situado no Norte e outro no Sul do Haiti. Nosso principal objetivo é elaborar uma análise das lógicas e das interações com os espíritos em uma perspectiva processual que inclua também o papel de outras agências, de materialidades diversas e de novos contextos situacionais, como as conversões religiosas e o avanço de missionários protestantes pelo país.
