RESUMO Este artigo analisa os efeitos das políticas macroeconômicas do Plano Real na agricultura e discute as novas perspectivas abertas após a forte desvalorização de nossa moeda em janeiro de 1999. A agricultura brasileira foi severamente afetada pela combinação de altas taxas de juros - taxa de câmbio supervalorizada. Além disso, teve que enfrentar os problemas de redução excessiva das tarifas de importação, de importações financiadas e de baixas taxas de crescimento econômico nos últimos anos. Algumas mudanças favoráveis no comércio internacional compensaram, pelo menos parcialmente, o problema da supervalorização da moeda. O Brasil sempre foi reconhecido como tendo uma forte vantagem comparativa na agricultura. A desvalorização ocorrida, a partir de janeiro de 1999, abre melhores perspectivas para o país explorar sua competitividade nos mercados internacionais.
RESUMO Quatro anos após a quebra do Acordo Internacional do Café, este artigo é uma tentativa de avaliar a posição do governo brasileiro. O Brasil era, em 1989, o país muito contra a renovação do acordo. Para fazer isso, foi feito um exame das evidências empíricas durante os últimos trinta anos. Essas evidências mostraram perdas na produção, exportação e participação de mercado do café no Brasil. Na prática, o Brasil foi o único país a suportar o ônus do acordo cafeeiro. Os outros países lucraram com os custos do Brasil. Também é mostrada a grande vantagem comparativa da produção de café no Brasil e que ajustes devem ser feitos nas políticas domésticas.
