O polo cacaueiro do Norte matogrossense foi iniciado no final da década de 1970 e começou o seu declínio quando ocorreu a combinação de um processo inflacionário severo com restrições de crédito oficial, pico do ciclo do ouro, falta de um mercado regional, ataque de doença e falta de tradição com a cultura. Esses fatores fizeram com que a implantação de novas áreas fosse praticamente paralisada. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram diagnosticar o panorama atual da lavoura cacaueira e traçar o perfil socioeconômico do produtor familiar no município de Alta Floresta. Foi aplicado um questionário utilizando a técnica quantitativa. Dos produtores pesquisados apresentam-se alguns resultados: 56% tem como atividade produtiva a pecuária aliada ao plantio de cacaueiro e horticultura; 28% deles se motivaram a plantar o cacaueiro devido ao incentivo da CEPLAC e INDECO, porém fatores limitantes como falta de mão de obra externa, falta de assistência técnica e adoção de políticas públicas foram entraves para o desenvolvimento da produção de cacau. A vassoura-de-bruxa (VB) afetou os produtores em 68% dos casos e 56% fazem a colheita sem manejo adequado.Palavras-chave: SAF, cacau, pastagem, agricultura familiar, garimpo.Current view of the pole of cocoa tree in the municipal district of Alta Floresta and profile of the family farmer. The poles of cocoa trees in the North of the Brazilian State of Mato Grosso was started in the late of 1970s and began its decline occurred when the combination of inflationary severe process, restrictions of official credit, peak of the cycle gold mining, lack of a regional market, attack of disease and lack tradition on the cocoa cultivations. These factors have led to the practically paralysed the expansion of new farmland. The objectives of this study was to diagnose the current view of the cocoa tree farming and to draw the socioeconomic profile of the family farmer in the municipal district of Alta Floresta. A questionnaire was applied using to quantitative technique. For the investigated farmers some results show up: 56 % take as a productive activity the cattle-raising allied to the planting of cocoa and horticulture; for 28 % the reason to cultivate the cocoa is due to the incentive of CEPLAC and INDECO, however limitants factors like the lack of manual workers, lack of techinical assistence and nonadoption of public policies that have been barriers for the development of the cocoa production. The witch's broom affected the producers in 68 % of the cases and 56 % use to harvest without appropriate practices.
