Background Rickettsia bacteria are responsible for diseases in humans and animals around the world, however few details are available regarding its ecology and circulation among wild animals and human populations at high transmission risk in Brazil. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of ticks and Rickettsia spp. in wild boars, corresponding hunting dogs and hunters. Methods Serum samples and ticks were collected from 80 free-range wild boars, 170 hunting dogs and 34 hunters from southern and central-western Brazil, from the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes, respectively, between 2016 and 2018. Serum samples were tested by indirect immunofluorescent-antibody assay (IFA) to detect IgG antibodies against Rickettsia rickettsii , Rickettsia parkeri , Rickettsia bellii , Rickettsia rhipicephali and Rickettsia amblyommatis . Tick species were identified by morphological taxonomic keys, as previously described. A total of 164 ticks including A . sculptum , A . brasiliense and A . aureolatum were tested in PCR assays for Spotted Fever Group (SFG) Rickettsia spp. Results A total of 58/80 (72.5%) wild boars, 24/170 (14.1%) hunting dogs and 5/34 (14.7%) hunters were positive (titers ≥ 64) to at least one Rickettsia species. A total of 669/1,584 (42.2%) ticks from wild boars were identified as Amblyomma sculptum , 910/1,584 (57.4%) as Amblyomma brasiliense , 4/1,584(0.24%) larvae of Amblyomma spp. and 1/1,584 (0.06%) nymph as Amblyolmma dubitatum . All 9 ticks found on hunting dogs were identified as Amblyomma aureolatum and all 22 ticks on hunters as A . sculptum . No tested tick was positive by standard PCR to SFG Rickettsia spp. Conclusions The present study was the concomitant report of wild boar, hunting dog and hunter exposure to SFG rickettsiae agents, performed in two different Brazilian biomes. Wild boar hunting may increase the risk of human exposure and consequently tick-borne disease Wild boars may be carrying and spreading capybara ticks from their original habitats to other ecosystems. Further studies can be required to explore the ability of wild boars to infecting ticks and be part of transmission cycle of Rickettsia spp.
Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii has been extensively studied in wild boars worldwide due to the emerging risk for human infection through meat consumption. However, this is the first study that reports toxoplasmosis seroprevalence in wild boars, wild boar hunters and their hunting dogs. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the seroprevalence of anti-T. gondii antibodies in the complex wild boars, hunting dogs and hunters, and to determine the risk factors associated with seropositivity in southern and central-western Brazil. Overall, anti-T. gondii seropositivity was observed in 15/71 (21.1%) wild boars by modified agglutination test (MAT); and 49/157 (31.2%) hunting dogs and 15/49 (32.7%) hunters by indirect immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis in Brazilian wild boars was within the national and international range, posting wild boars as potential environmental sentinels for T. gondii presence. In addition, the findings have comparatively shown that wild boars have been less exposed to infection than hunting dogs or hunters in both Brazilian regions. Seropositivity for T. gondii was statistically higher in 12/14 (85.7%) captured wild boars when compared to 5/57 (7.0%) free-range wild boars (p = 0.000001). Similarly, captured wild boars from anthropized areas were more likely to be seropositive than of natural regions (p = 0.000255). When in multiple regression model, dogs with the habit of wild boar hunting had significant more chance to be positive (adjusted-OR 4.62 CI 95% 1.16–18.42). Despite potential as sentinels of environmental toxoplasmosis, seroprevalence in wild boars alone may provide a biased basis for public health concerns; thus, hunters and hunting dogs should be always be included in such studies. Although hunters should be aware of potential T. gondii infection, wild boars from natural and agricultural areas may present lower protozoa load when compared to wild boars from anthropized areas, likely by the higher presence of domestic cats as definitive hosts.
The living conditions of the prison population favors the spread of often asymptomatic infectious diseases which can be taken to the community. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B and C, as well as possible co-infections among prison inmates in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul. We conducted a cross-sectional study of records of serological analyses of the Regional Prison of Santa Cruz do Sul, state of Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) performed between January 2016 and June 2017. Data were obtained from files of the 13th Regional Laboratory of Santa Cruz do Sul. We included in the study all serological records obtained regarding the following diseases: syphilis, HIV, and hepatitis B and C. We analyzed data from 349 convicts with the mean age of 31 (± 8.56) years, ranging from 18 to 59 years, with the predominance of males 86%. Positive results: 6% for syphilis, 4.9% for HIV, and 8.3% for hepatitis C. Regarding hepatitis B the data obtained were 86% of subjects were susceptible to the virus, 1.1% were in the acute phase, 1.4% in chronic phase, 5.7% with past infection and 2.2% in immunological window period. Co-infections detected were: 0.3% (n = 1) syphilis/hepatitis C, 0.6% (n = 2) HIV/ hepatitis B, and 0.9% (n = 3) HIV/hepatitis C and HIV/syphilis. The prison environment provides data from a population at high risk for spread of infectious diseases and we found a high prevalence in this study. Combative measures such as information, identification and treatment are urgent to prevent the spread of these diseases.
Hunting activities are a potential risk factor for human infection with Leptospira spp. and, although wild boar seroprevalence has been studied, there are no concurrent serosurveys of wild boars ( Sus scrofa), hunting dogs ( Canis lupus familiaris), and hunters. The aim of our study was to assess the seroprevalence of Leptospira spp. antibodies in free-ranging wild boars, hunting dogs, and hunters, and risk factors associated with exposure in southern and central-western Brazil. Leptospira spp. antibodies were serologically detected using the microscopic agglutination test (MAT), with a total 30 serovars. Overall, 12.2% (9/74) of wild boars and 10.6% (16/170) of hunting dogs were seropositive for at least one serovar and all hunters 0.0% (0/49) were seronegative for Leptospira spp. Seropositivity was statistically higher in 42.1% (8/19) wild boars from natural areas when compared to 2.4% (1/41) from anthropized areas ( P<0.001), with prevalence ratio of 17.14 (95% confidence interval: 2.29–128.36). Despite the limited sample size, our findings showed that hunters may be less exposed to Leptospira spp. than are wild boars, particularly in natural areas where Leptospira spp. may be maintained by wild reservoirs. In addition to acting as sentinels, hunting dogs may play a role in disease transmission of sylvatic leptospiral serovars.
