BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:Professional musicians are commonly affected by musculoskeletal discomfort. Understanding the association of such affections with psychic health may contribute to promote the health of such professionals. So, this study aimed at investigating associations between work-related stress and musculoskeletal complaints of orchestra musicians. METHODS:This study was developed with 22 orchestra musicians. Evaluation of the frequency of musculoskeletal complaints in different body regions and of work-related stress was carried out according to Theorell and Karasek's demand-control model. RESULTS: Most musculoskeletal complaints were on neck, left hemi-body and back. Forty one percent of musicians had perception of active work, with high demands (81%), high intellectual judgment (95.4%) and authority over decisions (72.7%). Musicians in general had positive perception of social support. Workers with work perception with major stress and active had most frequent complaints. Factors were presented with questions which may be allocated for future ergonomic interventions. CONCLUSION: A trend to more frequent muscle complaints of workers with work perception with higher demands was observed. AbstractBackground: The health and work conditions of professional musicians have been little investigated. Objectives: Identify the frequency of poor sleep quality in a group of orchestra musicians and examine possible associations with the variables of perception of overall quality of life. Method: The sleep quality, the chronotype and overall quality of life were evaluated by mean questionnaire of Pittsburgh, Horne-Ostberg e WHOQOL-bref, respectively, at 22 musicians (17 men and five women) in an orchestra. Results: The prevalence of poor sleep quality was 71%. The dimensions most associated with quality of sleep were the ability to perform activities of day-to-day (p = 0.003) and labor (p = 0.004), pain and discomfort (p = 0.006), satisfaction with personal relationships (p = 0.007) and the ability to enjoy life (p = 0.008). The physical analysis of quality of life was the greatest explanatory power for the sleep quality (34%). The chronotype and hours of sleep do not show association with the quality of sleep. Discussion: We found a high frequency of poor sleep quality among orchestra musicians. Measures to promote sleep quality in this population should prioritize the variables related to quality of life in its physical aspect.
Foi aplicado um questionário com informações Perception of orchestral musicians about work environment and conditionsAbstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the perception of 11 orchestral string (viola and violin) musicians of both genders with respect to their work environment and conditions. We applied a questionnaire with demographic information and the scale Profile of Work Environment and Working Conditions by Nahas et al. (2009), which analyzes the following components: physical environment, social environment, development and professional achievement, salary and benefits, and social relevance. The social environment component presented the highest score -8.00 (1.50 points), followed by professional achievement -7.11 (1.96 points), and physical environment -6.89 (0.93 points). The salary and benefits provided by the orchestra presented the lowest score -6.78 (1.56 points). In general, the musicians showed positive perceptions of the components related to work environment and working conditions. However, remuneration and social relevance are work bases that could contribute to improve the working conditions of these professionals.
