ABSTRACT. Mechanical sugarcane harvest without burning and continuous straw on the soil surface may affect the Rottboellia exaltata infestation dynamics in sugarcane fields. Three greenhouse experiments were conducted with the aim of studying the effects of sowing depth (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 cm), amount of sugarcane straw on the soil surface (0, 5, 10, and 15 ton ha -1 ), and residual herbicide (clomazone, flumioxazin, imazapyr, isoxaflutole, and s-metolachlor) on the emergence of Rottboellia exaltata. For each experiment, a completely randomized design with four replicates was applied. The combination of mulch on soil surface (especially with larger amounts of straw) with deeper sowing depths provides less emergence and mass accumulation of R. exaltata. In bare soil, the sowing depth did not affect the weed dynamics. Clomazone and imazapyr were effective herbicides controlling R. exaltata regardless of the amount of straw on the soil surface. Flumioxazin was also effective in controlling R. exaltata but only under bare soil conditions. Even with 60 mm of accumulated rainfall over the 4 day period after application, the amount of flumioxazin leached to the soil was not enough to ensure the same control observed when applying the herbicide on bare soil. Keywords: itchgrass, mulch, herbicide retention, weed dynamics.
-The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of S-metolachlor applied in pre-emergence conditions for the control of Brachiaria decumbens, Digitaria horizontalis, and Panicum maximum in sugar cane mechanically harvested without previous burning of the crop (green harvest) with the crop residue either left or not on the soil surface. The experiments were established in the field according to a randomized complete block design with four repetitions in a 7 x 2 split-plot scheme. In the plots, five herbicide treatments were studied (S-metolachlor at 1.44, 1.92, and 2.40 kg ha , and isoxaflutole at 0.188 kg ha -1 ), and two control treatments with no herbicide application. In the subplots, the presence or absence of sugar cane crop residue on the soil surface was evaluated. S-metolachlor efficacy was not hampered by either 14 or 20 t ha -1 of sugar cane crop residue on the soil surface. When sugar cane crop residue was covering the soil surface, S-metolachlor at a rate of 1.44 kg ha -1 resulted in weed control similar at their larger rates, where as without the presence of crop residue, S-metolachlor controlled B. decumbens, D. horizontalis, and P. maximum at the rates of 1.92, 1.44, and 1.92 kg ha -1 , respectively. The herbicides clomazone and isoxaflutole were effective for the studied species, independently of the crop residue covering the soil surface. S-metolachlor caused no visible injury symptoms to the sugar cane plant. Clomazone and isoxaflutole caused visible injuries to the sugar cane plant. None of the herbicides negatively affected the number of viable culms m 2 or the culm height and diameter. Keywords: signal grass, crabgrass, guinea grass, crop residue. ABSTRACT.With the objective to study the control of Brachiaria decumbens and Panicum maximum by herbicide S-metolachlor as influenced by the time interval between the herbicide application the occurrence of rain and the amount of sugarcane straw on the soil, two experiments were conducted in pots under greenhouse conditions. In the first, the factors were the amount of sugarcane straw left on the soil surface (0, 3, 6, 10, or 15 ton. ha -1 ) and the S-metolachlor applied at doses of 0, 0.96, 1.44, 1.92, or 2.40 kg ha -1 . In the second, the factors were the amount of sugarcane straw left on the soil surface (0 or 10 ton. ha -1 ), the interval of time elapsed between the application of S-metolachlor and simulated rain, which took place 1 day before and 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, or 20 days after the application. The herbicide doses were not affected by the amounts of straw left on the soil surface. When straw was not left on the soil surface, the control of the weeds by the herbicide was not influenced by the time interval up to 20 days after herbicide application. With 10 ton. ha -1 of straw, the control exerted by S-metolachlor was equally efficient whether it rained up to 12 days after the herbicide application. P. maximum was controlled even when the rain fell one day before the herbicide application. Keywords: signal grass, buffalo grass, crop residues, herbicide leaching.
Aruana ABSTRACTThe present work aimed to study the management of adult plants of Panicum maximum cv. Aruana by glyphosate applied alone and mixed with quizalofop-p-tefuryl associated with the sequential application of glyphosate and mechanical harvest before application. Two experiments were conducted under field conditions. Plants of P. maximum of one experiment were cut and, in the other, no. Six treatments [glyphosate (1.08 and 1.44 kg ha -1 ), glyphosate (1.08 and 1.44 kg ha) in combination with quizalofop-ptefuryl (0.12 kg ha -1 ), quizalofop-p-tefuryl (0.12 kg ha -1 ), and a control without herbicide] were studied, combined with (or without) the sequential application of glyphosate (1.08 kg ha -1 ), sprayed nine days after the first. In both conditions, cut and not cut, none of the experimental treatments resulted in 100% mortality of plants of P. maximum cv. Aruana. Furthermore, the application of quizalofop-p-tefuryl isolate was ineffective in control the adult plants and its association with glyphosate no added advantages. In both experiments, the application in a single season at 1.44 kg ha -1 glyphosate was sufficient to control plants (>85%). The same occurred with the combination of 1.08 kg ha -1 of glyphosate over sequential 1.08 kg ha -1 .
