Nutrient build up in sandy soils receiving manure additionsAbstract -The objective of this work was to quantify changes on carbon and nutrient contents in soils under continuous manure additions. Eighteen cropped fields that had received annual additions of manure for at least two years and four fields under pasture with no history of manure addition were sampled to assess if this practice results in the accumulation or losses of added nutrients. Soils samples from the 0-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm layers were taken from each field, and analyzed with regard to their physical (particle size and soil density) and chemical (pH, total C, N and P, extractable P by Mehlich-1 and water, and exchangeable cations) properties. Manure samples used in nine fields were also analyzed for chemical composition. Manure additions resulted in a build up of nutrient stocks near to 20 Mg ha -1 of C, 2 Mg ha -1 of N and Ca, and 0.5 to 1 Mg ha -1 of P, K and Mg (0-60 cm). Water-soluble P concentrations of 7 mg kg -1 in the 40-60 cm layer indicated losses of this nutrient, the less mobile in soils. Accumulation of exchangeable cations in the 0-60 cm layer, in comparison with control areas, indicates an even greater potential for losses of these nutrients.
The growing concern with the amount of plastic materials found in the oceans makes it necessary to develop biodegradable materials that have low toxicity to marine animals and humans, but at the same time are resistant to the actions of microorganisms such as fungi or bacteria. On the other hand, agricultural waste rich in inorganic materials (such as silica) is often discarded, while it could be reused as a source of raw material. Considering these points, sodium silicate solution extracted from sugarcane waste ash was utilized to prepare biodegradable bioplastics based on corn starch and potato starch. The starch-based bioplastics were produced by casting and characterized by several physical-chemical techniques evaluating tensile strength, elongation at break, color analyses, transparency, opacity, moisture, and biodegradation assay. Bioplastics prepared with corn starch presented better physical, mechanical, and thermal properties and optical quality than bioplastics based on potato starch. The samples called CS3 and PS3, with 5.0% glycerol, were the most resistant to tensile strengths of 0.73 and 0.36 MPa, respectively. On the other hand, the highest elongation at break values were found for the samples with 7.5% glycerol (CS9, 52.90% and PS9, 49.33%). Corn starch-based bioplastics were more thermally resistant (CS3, 152.86 °C and CS9, 135.20 °C) when compared to potato starch-based bioplastics (PS3, 140.39 °C and PS9, 127.57 °C). In general, the addition of sodium silicate solution improved the mechanical and thermal properties of both types of bioplastics. The potato starch-based bioplastics were biodegraded in 5 days, while those made from corn starch took almost 40 days. The inclusion of sodium silicate inhibited fungal growth for both corn starch and potato starch bioplastics. The results suggest that sodium silicate solution obtained from renewable sources can be incorporated into starch-based bioplastics for production of biodegradable packaging with antifungal activity.
In view of the low N concentration in organic fertilizers, it is necessary to use high rates of such fertilizers to attend coffee crop requirements. Hence, N is the most limiting nutrient for organic coffee production. The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea) organic fertilization on the growth and nutritional status of coffee cultivars, as well as to quantify plant biomass and N input derived from biological nitrogen fixation, and their effect on soil chemical characteristics. The experiment consisted of six coffee (Coffea arabica) cultivars intercropped with and without sunn hemp sown in November 2001 and pruned at mid-height 76 days later. At 175 days, the standing biomass of the legume was cut, measuring dry mass, total N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and 15 N natural abundance, resulting 16 t ha -1 of dry mass and the recycling of 444, 21, 241, 191, and 44 kg ha -1 of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg, respectively. Cultivars 'Obatã' and 'Catuaí Vermelho' presented the highest growth rates in terms of plant height, while cultivars 'Icatu' and 'Oeiras' presented the lowest rates. Biological nitrogen fixation associated to the legume introduced more than 200 kg ha -1 of N, which is a demonstration that N fertilization in organic cropping systems is a valuable alternative. Intercropping lead to a constant coffee leaf N content during the entire cropping cycle, contrary to what was observed in plots grown without sunn hemp. Key words: Coffea arabica, Crotalaria juncea, biological nitrogen fixation, nutrient input, green manure TAXA DE CRESCIMENTO E ESTADO NUTRICIONAL DO CAFEEIRO EM SISTEMA DE PRODUÇÃO ORGÂNICORESUMO: Devido a baixa concentração de N nos fertilizantes orgânicos, são necessárias doses elevadas dessas fontes para suprir as exigências do cafeeiro.
