Recebido em 19/5/03; aceito em 30/1/04; publicado na web em 17/6/04 SIMPLE FLAME PHOTOMETRIC EXPERIMENTS TO TEACH PRINCIPLES OF ATOMIC SPECTROMETRY IN UNDERGRADUATE ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY COURSES. The purpose of this paper is the development of simple strategies to teach basic concepts of atomic spectrometry. Metals present in samples found in the daily lives of students are determined by flame atomic emission spectrometry (FAES). FAES is an accurate, precise, and inexpensive analytical method often used for determining sodium, potassium, lithium, and calcium. Historical aspects and their contextualization for students are also presented and experiments with samples that do not require pre-treatment are described. Keywords: flame atomic emission photometry; education in analytical chemistry; instrumental analysis.
Recebido em 15/3/08; aceito em 5/2/09; publicado na web em 28/7/09 TERMOGRAVIMETRY: A NEW APPROACH FOR THE CLASSIC DETERMINATION OF CALCIUM IN EGGSHELLS. The use of thermoanalytical data in sample preparation is described as a tool to catch the students' attention to some details that can simplify both the analysis and the analytical procedure. In this case, the thermal decomposition of eggshells was first investigated by thermogravimetry (TGA). Although the classical procedures suggest long exposure to high temperatures, the TGA data showed that the decomposition of organic matter takes place immediately when the sample is heated up to 800 °C under air atmosphere. After decomposition, the calcium content was determined by flame atomic emission photometry and compared with the results obtained using classical volumetric titration with EDTA.Keywords: thermogravimetry; flame atomic emission photometry; sample preparation.
Recebido em 14/5/01; aceito em 28/11/01 IDENTIFICATION OF NATURAL PIGMENTS FROM VEGETAL SPECIES USING PAPER CHROMATOGRAPHY. The use of natural dyes to demonstrate principles of paper chromatography is proposed. Extraction of the coloring compounds were performed in order to obtain the aglycone form of the anthocyanins present in the crude extracts. Separations were carried out on chromatographic paper with BAW (butanol/acetic acid/water) as mobile phase and the results compared with literature data. The crude extracts were obtained from Tibouchina granulosa, Rododhendron simsii, Impatiens walleriana flowers which are wildely found in Brazil and Phaseolus vulgaris L. grains skin which is the principal ingredient of the world famous "feijoada". Such species were chosen in order to attract the students attention since they are present in their quotidian, in agreement with the new proposals for Brazilian education. Keywords: paper chromatography teaching; anthocyanins; chemical education.
