Em primeiro lugar, meus sinceros agradecimentos ao meu orientador Prof. Paulo Porto. Nossa história começou no dia 15 de agosto de 2010, quando enviei o e-mail com o título "Apresentação para uma possível orientação no Programa de Pós-Graduação Interunidades em Ensino de Ciências". Na ocasião, estava prestando o processo seletivo para o mestrado do referido programa. Era um período de inúmeros receios, dúvidas e incertezas sobre o futuro, como, por exemplo, encontrar um orientador, pois não conhecia absolutamente nenhum professor da Universidade de São Paulo (USP). Lembro que seu nome e e-mail chegaram por sugestão de um amigo, Julio Rocha. Chamou-lhe a atenção, sabendo do meu interesse em estudar História da Química, a descrição de um professor que trabalhava com tal disciplina, veiculada por uma página da internet da instituição. Desde o primeiro contato via email até os dias de hoje, mostrou-se extremamente cordial e aberto ao diálogo. Aliás, como costumo dizer aos demais colegas do grupo de pesquisa, ele é um "artesão das palavras". Suas palavras são escolhidas com perícia, sempre respeitando o outro, independentemente de sua posição social, econômica, cultural, acadêmica, etc. No âmbito da pesquisa, sempre participou ativamente, lendo todos os textos produzidos por mim, criticando, reformulando e sugerindo novos caminhos. Não obstante, deu liberdade e autonomia para construir minha pesquisa. Aprendi muito com sua conduta como orientador e espero instituí-la quando ocupar a mesma posição. Mais do que elogios em forma de palavras, a melhor forma de reconhecimento para com uma pessoa é incorporar seus modos de pensar e agir em sua própria realidade.Agradeço ao Grupo de Pesquisa em História da Ciência e Ensino de Química (GHQ). A quantidade e diversidade de pessoas que pude conhecer desde 2011, ano em que ingressei no mestrado, enriqueceram não só esta tese, mas, também, a formação acadêmica, profissional e humana. Em especial, gostaria de lembrar os seguintes nomes: Zé Otávio; Anielli; Marcelo; Marcos; Mariana; Paulo Vidal; Elisa; Helena; Karina; Hélio; Winston; Júlia; e Yuly. Com alguns eu convivi por mais tempo, com outros menos; independentemente do tempo, cada qual contribuiu à sua maneira.O Programa de Pós-Graduação Interunidades em Ensino de Ciências da USP merece ser exaltado também. A vinda para São Paulo, em 2011, foi motivada, dentre outros fatores, pela inexistência, naquela época, de um programa de pós-graduação semelhantes em minha instituição de origem. Além da oportunidade de realizar pesquisas na área de Ensino de Ciências, possibilitou o contato com pesquisadores de diferentes campos e linhas de pesquisa da Educação em Ciências. O número é vasto, por isso citarei apenas os das USP, como os Professores Osvaldo Pessoa Jr.,
Primeiramente, agradeço aos meus pais, Jorge Rozentalski e Leduvina Fortes Rozentalski, e à minha irmã, Vanessa Fortes Rozentalski, pelo apoio incondicional em tudo o que escolho para a minha vida. Nos momentos de desilusão, medo, hesitação e angústia que sofri durante este mestrado, foram em vocês que pensei para me manter aqui. Até o fim da minha vida estarei em débito com vocês! Ao meu orientador, Prof. Paulo Alves Porto, por possuir duas dimensões nas quais a maioria das pessoas carece em ter concomitantemente no mundo acadêmicoa excelência tanto humana quanto pesquisadora. A primeira diz respeito à sua educação impecável, não só para com a minha pessoa, mas com todos os que o cercam. Enquanto que a segunda se refere à liberdade intelectual que esse proporciona aos seus orientandos, mas sem deixá-los a mercê da própria sorte, indicando os limites e caminhos mais adequados para que esses possam se desenvolver em plenitude. À Prof a. Joanez Aires, da UFPR, que tornou possível este caminho que tomei em direção à pós-graduação na área de Ensino de Química. Ela plantou a semente que, agora, começa a dar os primeiros frutos. Agradeço por todo o carinho e interesse ofertado desde que vim para São Paulo. Estes laços nunca se romperão, independente do tempo-espaço! Ainda da UFPR, não poderia deixar de agradecer ao Prof. Márcio Peres de Araujo e ao seu grupo de pesquisa do Laboratório de Inorgânica Aplicada (LIA), o qual fiz parte por mais de três anos durante a graduação. Nunca vou esquecer suas palavras de incentivo quando lhe disse que aprofundaria os estudos na área de Ensino de Química. Resumo: Neste artigo foi analisado o emprego de diagramas de energia de orbitais em livros didáticos de Química Geral, utilizados no ensino universitário brasileiro ao longo do século XX. Para isso, 16 livros publicados entre 1950 e 2001 foram selecionados, e a semiótica peirceana foi utilizada como referencial de análise para o entendimento sobre diagramas. A análise revelou que o uso de diagramas de energia de orbitais ocorre em diferentes contextos de aplicação e com diferentes objetivos. Do ponto de vista da semiótica, os significados dos signos que compõem os diagramas, e as regras que orientam sua construção e operação, são previamente convencionados, fornecendo, assim, bases mínimas a respeito de como interpretá-los. Todavia, aspectos mais sutis se afastam dessa base mínima e podem acarretar interpretações não pretendidas por seus autores. Tais concepções alternativas podem ser superadas através de compreensões mais elaboradas sobre a natureza e o papel das representações no ensino, fundamentadas na semiótica Peirceana.
Este trabalho visa investigar como as imagens relativas ao conceito de orbital foram apresentadas por livros de Química Geral voltados para o Ensino Superior ao longo do século XX, especialmente no que diz respeito a aspectos ontológicos e epistemológicos transmitidos por elas. As imagens presentes em 26 livros utilizados no Brasil foram analisadas de acordo com a semiótica peirceana, a fim de avaliar: qual a natureza do orbital; qual a relação entre representação e objeto representado; quais aspectos do objeto são destacados por meio da representação; quais as restrições e potencialidades da representação. Observa-se que essas imagens são entendidas pelos livros, majoritariamente, como representações da densidade de probabilidade máxima e identificadas, principalmente, por superfícies limites, as quais apresentam os orbitais como possuindo tamanhos, formas e natureza direcional bem definidas. Não há, na maioria dos livros, suficientes esclarecimentos sobre o significado de tais imagens, especialmente em relação: ao objeto do qual a representação toma lugar; como as imagens foram produzidas; quais aspectos a representação destaca do objeto; e quais as semelhanças e diferenças entre as diversas imagens relacionadas aos orbitais. As dificuldades para o ensino, decorrentes dos resultados aqui apresentados, podem ser superadas por meio da discussão explícita sobre o manejo e a compreensão das representações, fomentada, por exemplo, pela semiótica peirceana.
