Dentro de la narrativa contemporánea, la obra del sudafricano John Maxwell Coetzee se traduce en un universo ficcional de vital importancia para comprender el fenómeno del colonialismo, así como las guerras y los exilios asociados a él. En esta propuesta nos interesa problematizar y comprender el lugar que ocupa el lenguaje en las relaciones de alteridad que se tejen en medio del conflicto, la opresión y el aislamiento, en las obras Foe (1986) y La edad de hierro (1990). A través de los personajes de estas novelas nos adentraremos en las posibilidades o imposibilidades del lenguaje en tanto configuración cultural determinada por circunstancias sociohistóricas. Finalmente, la mirada del rostro del otro, el lenguaje como morada o como gramática de lo inhumano, serán algunas metáforas que participarán en la configuración de sentido alrededor de los temas enunciados.
