Am Westrand des Nördlinger Ries überragt der 668 m hohe Ipf als mächtiger Zeugenberg des Weißen Jura der Schwäbischen Alb die Landschaft. Seine imposante Erscheinung und die umfangreichen, mächtigen Befestigungen haben schon lange den Verdacht genährt, daß es sich hier um eine der Burgen der älteren Eisenzeit handelt, die wir unter dem Begriff "Fürstensitze" subsumieren. Die Bedeutung und Funktion der ehemaligen Befestigung blieben jedoch lange unbekannt. Erst eine in den 1960er Jahren auf dem Ipf gefundene schwarz gefirnißte attische Scherbe einer Kylix aus der Zeit um 500 v. Chr. wurde als Beleg für südliche Importgüter dahingehend interpretiert, auf dem Berg einen Sitz jener sozialen Elite zu vermuten, deren wirtschaftliche Potenz es erlaubte, Kontakte mit dem mediterranen Süden zu pflegen. Dieser Verdacht hat nun seit dem Jahr 2000 durch neue Ausgrabungen und spektakuläre Entdeckungen in der Umgebung des Ipf unerwartete Aktualität erfahren und die ehemalige Rolle seiner Befestigungen sowie des Siedlungsumfelds schlagartig erweitert. Neue Bedeutung gewinnt im Lichte der jüngsten Funde vom Ipf und seiner Umgebung auch eine bereits vor einigen Jahren bei Ehringen gefundene Bronzestatuette eines nackten Jünglings. Sie stellt einen Tänzer dar und stand ursprünglich zusammen mit anderen Figuren als Aufsatz auf dem Rand eines Gefäßes, am ehesten eines in Kampanien oder seiner näheren Umgebung produzierten Bronzekessels des frühen 5. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. Mit diesem zusammen dürfte sie im Rahmen der nun auch durch die attische Keramik und andere Güter bezeugten Kulturbeziehungen mit der Mittelmeerwelt in das keltische Machtzentrum am Ipf importiert worden sein. Der Gedanke, daß die Statuette zusammen mit dem Kessel als Grabbeigabe eines lokalen Potentaten die Jahrhunderte überdauert hat, ist nicht a priori von der Hand zu weisen; er läßt sich jedoch mangels näherer Anhaltspunkte zum primären Fundort der Statuette nicht konkretisieren. Depuis longtemps déjà, son allure imposante et les importantes fortifications firent penser qu'il s'agit d'une des citadelles du Premier âge du Fer, que nous regroupons sous le terme de «citadelles princières». Mais l'importance et la signification de cette fortification restèrent longtemps inconnues. Ce n'est que dans les années 60, grâce à la découverte d'un tesson attique à verni noir d'une kylix datant d'environ 500 av. J.-C., que l'on put interpréter cette importation méridionale comme témoin de la présence sur cette montagne d'une élite sociale dont la puissance économique lui permettait d'entretenir des contacts avec le monde méditer-ranéen. Depuis 2000, cette hypothèse est devenue actuelle de façon inattendue grâce à de nouvelles fouilles et des découvertes spectaculaires faites aux alentours de l'Ipf, et a élargi d'un seul coup le rôle des fortifications et de l'environnement de l'habitat.
