Seit einiger Zeit sind wir mit der Synthese von Derivaten des Cyclopentano-phenanthrens beschaftigt, vor allem mit dem dufbau von Stoffen, die dem cc-Follikelhormon, dem Ostron, nahestehen. Wir sind diesem Ziel in letzter Zeit etwas naher gekommen. In der 4. Mitteilungl) haben wir eine Verbindung beschrieben, die das vollstandige Kohlenstoffgerust des Ostrons enthalt: durch Addition von I-Enyl-
6-methoxy-3,4-diiiydronaphtalin (I) an 1 -Methyl-cyclopenten-dion-2,3 (II) haben wir eine Verbindung C,,H,,O, erhalten, der nach dem jetzigen Stand unserer Untcrsuchungeii wahrscheinlich die Konstitution I11 zukommt. Diesea Addukt III liiI3t sich durch einige kleine Umformungen in eine Verbindung iiberfuhren, die strukturidentisch ist mit dem naturlich vorkommenden Ostron. 0 0 Bei der katalytischen Hydrierung mit Palladium nimmt das Addukt 111 2 Mol Wasserstoff auf, wovon eines zur Absattigung der Doppelbindung C,-CI1 benutzt wird. Uas zweite $101 Wasserstoff addiert sich an die enolisierte 1,2-Diketo-gruppierung 3; es entsteht der Methylather eines E. Dane u. J. Schmitt, A. 536, 196 (1938). %) Vgl. I. B. H. Staudinger u. L. Die bisherige Entwicklung der Strukturfrage hat, durch Ausschließung anderer Möglichkeiten, zu der Annahme geführt, daß die beiden im Gesamtgefüge der Molekel noch nicht untergebrachten C-Atome als HC-CH 3 -Gruppe in Eing III. einen Rieber.ring, eingeordnet seien. Um mit dieser Annahme experimentell weiter zu kommen, haben wir uns die Aufgabe gestellt, die Natur dieses Einges, frei von den störenden Einflüssen benachbarter Gruppen, genauer kennenzulernen. Als Vorbild dienten die Methoden, die zum Studium der Einge I und II von Nutzen gewesen waren. Hier hatte die Kenntnis der Oxycholansäuren (3-und 7-) und der entsprechenden Ketosäuren die Möglichkeit geboten, sei es durch oxydative Eingsprengung, sei es auf dem Wege der Bromierung und sich anschließender Eeaktionen, Aufschluß über die Gestaltung dieser Einge sich zu verschaffen. Eing III hat sich bisher nicht in der gleichen Abgrenzung untersuchen lassen, da man noch kein geeignetes, nur in Eing III substituiertes Gallensäurederivat kennt. Denn die fast gleichzeitig von B or s ehe und Todd 1 ) und von Wieland und Deulofeu 2 ) aus Apocholsäure dargestellte /J-Cholensäure 024113302 enthält zwar mit ziemlicher Sicherheit ihre Doppelbindung in Eing III, jedoch in einer Lage, in der sie bisher nicht mit Erfolg zur Konstitutionsermittlung herangezogen werden konnte. Vor allem war sie nicht geeignet, die Gewinnung der zuerst angestrebten Verbindung, der aus der Aufsprengung von Eing III zu erwartenden Tricarbonsäure zu vermitteln.

Die Abkommlinge dieses einfachen Ringgertists haben in den letzten Jahren ein sehr allgemeines Interesse erlangt; nian darf wohl sagen, da5 die Vielseitigkeit der biologkhen Wirkung der Steroide einzig dastehend ist. In diese grofk Klasse von Naturstoffen gehoren die Sterine, die Gallensffuren, das antirachitische Vitamin, die miinnlichen und weiblichen Sexualhormone, das Nebennierenrindenhormon und die pflamlichen und tierischen Herzgifte. Vor einigen Jahren ist zusammenfassend in dieser Zeitschrift i i k die amlytische Untersuchung der Sterine und Gallen-&wen1) und der Sexualhormone*) berichtet worden.
