A hot melt 3D inkjet printing method with the potential to manufacture formulations in complex and adaptable geometries for the controlled loading and release of medicines is presented. This first use of a precisely controlled solvent free inkjet printing to produce drug loaded solid dosage forms is demonstrated using a naturally derived FDA approved material (beeswax) as the drug carrier and fenofibrate as the drug. Tablets with bespoke geometries (honeycomb architecture) were fabricated. The honeycomb architecture was modified by control of the honeycomb cell size, and hence surface area to enable control of drug release profiles without the need to alter the formulation. Analysis of the formed tablets showed the drug to be evenly distributed within the beeswax at the bulk scale with evidence of some localization at the micron scale. An analytical model utilizing a Fickian description of diffusion was developed to allow the prediction of drug release. A comparison of experimental and predicted drug release data revealed that in addition to surface area, other factors such as the cell diameter in the case of the honeycomb geometry and material wettability must be considered in practical dosage form design. This information when combined with the range of achievable geometries could allow the bespoke production of optimized personalised medicines for a variety of delivery vehicles in addition to tablets, such as medical devices for example.
In this article, we report the first continuous fabrication of inkjet-printed polyimide films, which were used as insulating layers for the production of capacitors. The polyimide ink was prepared from its precursor poly(amic) acid, and directly printed on to a hot substrate (at around 160 8C) to initialize a rapid thermal imidization. By carefully adjusting the substrate temperature, droplet spacing, droplet velocity, and other printing parameters, polyimide films with good surface morphologies were printed between two conducting layers to fabricate capacitors. In this work, the highest capacitance value, 2.82 6 0.64 nF, was achieved by capacitors (10 mm 3 10 mm) with polyimide insulating layers thinner than 1 lm, suggesting that the polyimide inkjet printing approach is an efficient way for producing dielectric components of microelectronic devices.
The high efficiencies (>22%) reached by perovskite-based optoelectronic devices in a very short period, demonstrates the great potential and tunability of this material. The current challenge lies in translating such efficiencies to commercially feasible forms produced through industrial fabrication methods. Herein, a novel first step towards the processability of starch-perovskite inks, developed in our previous work, is investigated, by using inkjet printing technology. The tunability of the viscosity of the starch-perovskite-based inks allows the selection of suitable concentrations to be used as printable inks. After exploration of several printing parameters, thick and opaque starch-perovskite nanocomposite films were obtained, showing interesting morphological and optical properties. The results obtained in this work underline the potential and versatility of our approach, opening the possibility to explore and optimize, in the future, further large-scale deposition methods towards fully printed and stable perovskite devices.
