Context: Pes planus is a prevalent chronic condition that causes foot pain, disability, and impaired plantar load distribution. Short-foot exercises are often recommended to strengthen intrinsic foot muscles and to prevent excessive decrease of medial longitudinal arch height. Objective: To investigate the effects of short-foot exercises on navicular drop, foot posture, pain, disability, and plantar pressures in pes planus. Design: Quasi-experimental study. Setting: Biomechanics laboratory. Participants: A total of 41 participants with pes planus were assigned to the short-foot exercises group (n = 21) or the control group (n = 20). Intervention: Both groups were informed about pes planus, usual foot care, and appropriate footwear. Short-foot exercises group performed the exercises daily for 6 weeks. Main Outcome Measures: Navicular drop, Foot Posture Index, foot pain, disability, and plantar pressures were assessed at the baseline and at the end of 6 weeks. Results: Navicular drop, Foot Posture Index, pain, and disability scores were significantly decreased; maximum plantar force of midfoot was significantly increased in short-foot exercises group over 6 weeks (P < .05). No significant differences were determined between the baseline and the sixth week outcomes in control group (P > .05). Conclusions: Six-week short-foot exercises provided a reduction in navicular drop, foot pronation, foot pain, and disability and increment in plantar force of medial midfoot in pes planus.
This study revealed that plantar tactile sensory was not associated with balance and mobility functions in older adults. This result may be related to the protection of other sensory systems supporting the maintenance of balance and mobility functions in physically active community-dwelling older people.
Amaç: Primer dismenore, kadınlarda en sık görülen jinekolojik sorunlardan birisidir ancak alternatif başa çıkma yöntemleriyle ilgili kanıtlar yeterli değildir. Bu çalışmanın amacı primer dismenoresi olan kadınlarda dört haftalık aerobik eğitim programının premenstrüel semptomlar, menstrüel semptomlar, emosyonel durum ve yaşam kalitesi üzerine etkinliğini araştırmaktı. Yöntemler: Katılımcılar randomize olarak aerobik egzersiz grubuna (AEG) (n=18) ve kontrol grubuna (KG) (n=19) ayrıldı. AEG, dört hafta boyunca haftada üç kez aerobik eğitim programına katılırken, KG düzenli bir fiziksel aktiviteye katılmadı. Katılımcılara Premenstrüel Sendrom ölçeği, Beck Anksiyete ölçeği (BAÖ), Beck Depresyon ölçeği (BDÖ) ve Kısa Form-36 (KF-36) uygulandı. Menstrüel semptomların yoğunluğu, vizüel analog skala ile menstrüel fazın ilk üç günü içerisinde yedi farklı zamanda değerlendirildi. İlk ve son değerlendirmeler iki ardışık ayda yapıldı. Bulgular: Premenstrüel semptomlar (p=0,012) ile kanamanın başlangıcındaki bel ağrısını (p=0,012) ve ikinci saatteki karın ağrısını (p=0,021) içeren bazı menstrüel semptomlar AEG'de azaldı. Ek olarak, KF-36'nın sosyal fonksiyon alanı, egzersizden sonra anlamlı derecede artarken (p=0,044), BAÖ ve BDÖ puanlarında anlamlı bir farklılık bulunmadı (p>0,05). Sonuç: Primer dismenoreli kadınlarda dört haftalık grup aerobik eğitim programı premenstrüel semptomları azaltmada etkilidir, menstrüel semptomları azaltmaya ve yaşam kalitesini geliştirmeye katkı sağlar.
Purpose: This study is performed to investigate the effectiveness of upper extremity and scapula Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) techniques in adhesive capsulitis (AC).Methods: Thirty-six subjects were randomized into two groups. Control group (n=18) was treated with conventional physiotherapy applications consisting of hot-pack and ultrasound, and wall and wand exercises instructed as a home program; study group (n=18) was treated with upper extremity and scapula PNF patterns besides conventional physiotherapy. Patients were treated five times a week, for a total of 15 sessions. Pain intensity was assessed on a visual analogue scale; postural deformities were evaluated by inspection. Range of shoulder movements (ROM) were measured by a universal goniometer. "Lateral Scapular Slide Test" and assessment of scapular position were used for evaluation of the scapula. Functional performance was assessed by Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI). Results:Intensity of pain during activity significantly decreased and ROM increased in both groups (p<0.05). While increase amounts of shoulder flexion and abduction ROMs were higher in the PNF group (p<0.05), there was no difference between groups in internal and external rotation movements. Although, night pain significantly decreased in the study group (p<0.05), it remained unchanged in the control group (p>0.05). Scapula position didn't change after therapy in both groups (p>0.05). SPADI scores decreased in both groups (p<0.05).Discussion: This study showed that PNF patterns provide significant contribution to night pain and range of flexion and abduction movements in patients with AC. Including PNF applications in AC treatment program may provide better outcomes. Yöntemler: Çalışmaya katılan 36 olgu, rastgele iki gruba ayrılmıştır. Kontrol grubundaki hastalar (n=18) geleneksel fizik tedavi uygulamalarından sıcak yastık, ultrason ve ev programı olarak gösterilen duvar ve baston egzersizleri ile, çalışma grubundaki hastalar (n=18) ise bunların yanı sıra fizyoterapist tarafından uygulanan üst ekstremite ve skapula PNF paternleri ile tedavi edildi. Hastalar haftada 5 kez olmak üzere toplam 15 seans tedavi aldı. Ağrı değerlendirmesi için Vizüel Analog Skalası kullanıldı. Gözlemsel postür analiz yöntemi ile postüral bozukluklar değerlendirildi. Üniversal gonyometre ile eklem hareket açıklığı ölçümü yapıldı. Skapulanın değerlendirmesinde, "Lateral Skapula Kayma Testi" ve skapula pozisyonu değerlendirmesi kullanıldı. "Omuz Ağrı ve Özürlülük İndeksi" ile hastaların fonksiyonel performansı değerlendirildi. Sonuçlar: Çalışmanın sonucunda, her iki grupta da aktivite sırasındaki ağrının anlamlı olarak azaldığı ve eklem hareket açıklığının arttığı görüldü (p<0.05). Fleksiyon ve abduksiyon hareket açıklığındaki artış, PNF grubunda fazla olurken (p<0.05), internal ve eksternal rotasyon hareket açıklığında gruplar arasında fark görülmedi. Background: Connective tissue manipulation (CTM) has therapeutic effects on diseases with autonomic imbalance, yet its mechanisms of action are not clearly identified. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate acute autonomic responses to CTM in healthy young women with various physical activity levels. Method: The study was designed as a nonrandomized, controlled single-center study. Healthy women aged between 18 and 25 years were assigned to a connective tissue manipulation group (CTMG) (n = 150) or a control group (CG) (n = 60). CTM was applied to the CTMG while the CG did not receive any intervention. Respiratory rate (RR), heart rate, systolic/diastolic blood pressures (SP/DP), oxygen saturation (OS) and body temperature were measured. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire short form was used to determine physical activity levels. Results: Analysis revealed significant reduction in SP and DP and an increment in RR in the CTMG (p < 0.05). RR increased and SP decreased among inactive, SP decreased among moderately active, and SP and OS decreased among highly active participants in the CTMG (p < 0.05). There were no significant alterations in the CG (p > 0.05). Conclusions: CTM has an immediate reducing effect on sympathetic activity in healthy young women independently from the physical activity level. Future studies are needed to clarify long-term effects of CTM on autonomic functions in healthy individuals.
