Advanced nurse practitioners have been identified as key to the future of primary care, as demand grows and the number of GPs falls. Here Emma Oliver identifies the benefits and challenges in establishing the new role The role of the advanced practitioner has been highlighted by a number of bodies to enhance nursing skills, place nurses at the forefront of primary care, and alleviate some of the pressure caused by a shortage of GPs. Here the author describes the results of introducing an advanced nurse practitioner into a surgery, where patients were extremely dissatisfied with the time it was taking to get an appointment with a GP. She outlines the benefits, the potential challenges and the cultural changes necessary to make the system work, as well as reporting back on patient satisfaction with the role of the advanced nurse practitioner
