The steady state and dynamic characteristics including whirl instability of waterlubricated journal bearings having three axial grooves are obtained theoretically. The Reynolds equation is solved numerically by the ®nite difference method satisfying the appropriate boundary conditions. The dynamic behaviour in terms of stiffness and damping coef®cients of ®lm and stability are found using a ®rst-order perturbation method. It has been shown that both load capacity and stability improve when smaller groove angles are used. scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
