More than three-fourths of all demented patients seen in one psychiatric ward of a university hospital during a two-year period were discharged within thirty days. Almost half of the group were able to return home from the hospital, and less than one-third were committed to a state hospital. These results support the view that admission to the psychiatric ward of a general hospital for medical-psychiatric assessment of dementia can be worth while. However, further investigation is needed to determine how well the short-term rehabilitation function of the ward serves to ease the transition of these patients from one setting to another.
