Hulpverleners beschouwden homoseksualiteit decennialang als gestoord gedrag, zonder dat zij oog hadden voor de pathologiserende invloeden van zo'n visie. Evoluerende maatschappelijke denkbeelden en zeden cree¨erden echter een atmosfeer waarin homoseksualiteit als een normale variatie van de natuur beschouwd werd. Dit artikel bespreekt de uitloper van dit klimaat: het affirmatieve perspectief. Een aantal thema's dat in de desbetreffende literatuur centraal staat, wordt besproken. Eerst bekijken we nader wat dit perspectief inhoudt, vertrekkend vanuit de basisdefinitie van Maylon. Vervolgens nemen we attituden van hulpverleners over homoseksualiteit onder de loep. Een ander centraal thema is de matchingproblematiek, waarbij men tracht na te gaan of gelijkenissen (in casu in seksuele orie¨ntatie) tussen clie¨nt en hulpverlener leiden tot een beter therapeutisch resultaat. Ten slotte gaan we in op specifieke opleidingsbehoeften. InleidingIn de voorbije decennia hebben talrijke emancipatiebewegingen van zich laten horen in de hoop rigide maatschappelijke waarden-en normenpatronen te wijzigen. Deze emancipatorische invloeden hebben geleid tot gehoor, respect en aanvaarding voor groepen die al of niet subtiel gestereotypeerd en gediscrimineerd worden.Ook de geestelijke gezondheidszorg speelt in op deze evolutie. Zo is er de laatste jaren een groeiende aandacht gekomen voor differentie¨le behandelgroepen, vooral vrouwen en allochtonen. Een centraal gegeven is dat deze groepen weinig genuanceerd en vaak denigrerend werden gevat in stereotyperende maatschappelijke denkbeelden. Van hulpverleners wordt verwacht dat zij, alvorens de therapie te starten, over voldoende objectieve kennis beschikken en zich niet laten (mis)leiden door vooroordelen. Daarnaast is een kritisch onderzoek van de eigen attitude tegenover de behandelgroep een belangrijk wapen tegen blinde vlekken. Een dergelijke professionele opstelling vermindert de kans om dominante maatschappelijke ideologiee¨n zomaar over te nemen en bevordert dat clie¨nten fris en onbevooroordeeld tegemoet worden getreden.Ook voor de homoseksuele subpopulatie bestaat een toenemende interesse onder hulpverleners. In sterk contrast met vroeger aanvaarden hulpverleners vandaag over het algemeen een homoseksuele orie¨ntatie als een normaal gegeven. Deze ingrijpende klimaatverandering roept een aantal boeiende vragen op die nog niet eerder zijn gesteld en laat ruimte voor exploratie van dit weinig ontgonnen onderzoeksdomein. Vragen zijn onder andere: hoe specifiek zijn problematieken van homoseksuele (in vergelijking met heteroseksuele) clie¨nten, welke therapeutische vaardigheden zijn belangrijk en welke valkuilen moeten worden vermeden.Homoseksualiteit is geen unidimensioneel fenomeen. Homoseksueel gedrag, verlangen en identiteit zijn drie onderscheiden componenten die zwak intercorreleren.
