El cultivo de cacao se ha convertido en un rubro de gran importancia social y económica en Ecuador, siendo significativa la realización de un diagnóstico agroecológico, para aportar herramientas en beneficio de la sostenibilidad de este cultivo. El objetivo de la investigación fue identificar las limitaciones para la sostenibilidad del cultivo de cacao en el cantón Milagro, Ecuador, mediante un diagnóstico agroecologico que incluyó elementos sociales, económicos, ambientales y técnicos. La población en estudio estuvo constituida por 70 familias productoras de cacao en la zona. Se utilizó el censo como técnica y el cuestionario como instrumento de recolección de datos. Los elementos que limitaron la sostenibilidad y el manejo agroecológico del cultivo de cacao, fueron: la falta de beneficios, uso de equipos de protección, seguridad laboral y capacitación de trabajadores. Fue recurrente la falta de manejo apropiado de los desechos químicos y de las aguas residuales. La mayoría de los productores contaron con acceso a servicios básicos, educación, disponibilidad de alimentos, mercados para vender su producción; sin embargo, se hace necesario realizar la revisión del grupo que manifestó no contar con los aspectos mencionados. No se presentó sostenibilidad en los aspectos ambientales y técnicos, requiriéndose una intervención en este sentido.
