The introduction of Project 2000 raised the stature of nursing education to that of the university-based training for other healthcare professionals. Historically, nursing workforce needs have been satisfied by the manipulation of the requirements to enter training, different levels of training and by the recruitment of trained nurses from abroad. This article examines issues regarding the level of training and education required to enable nurses to be fit for practice.
ISBN 0 192 63199 3.This interesting and clinically relevant book gives a thorough discussion of delirium and its significance in palliative care, pointing out that delirium is not commonly recognized and thus not properly addressed. The authors present material that is useful to nurses and physicians confronted with how to address both patient and affected family.Starting with an historical perspective, including how family and staff commonly react to delirium, the authors continue with a thorough review of pathophysiological and epidemiological aspects, clinical aspects including differential diagnoses and common aetiologies and underlying causes for delirium. Assessments are provided to differentiate delirium from dementia and other confusional states. Delirium in special populations is addressed, particularly as relevant to palliative care. Clinical assessment tools for delirium are presented, with a number of the tools included in the appendix. Management strategies include a review of pharmacological agents and non-pharmacological management strategies such as nursing, environmental, and psychological aspects of care for the patient and supportive interventions for the family. The significance of delirium to the patient's family is addressed early in the final chapter, which then goes on to discuss the psychological impact of terminal illness on families. The text is well organized, with tables, figures, and case studies. It is thoroughly referenced and presents divergent viewpoints where appropriate. The authors provide current information and point out areas where further study. The text is a good reference for anyone working with patients at risk for delirium in both acute and palliative care settings. ISBN 0 333 75006 3. This book is a fascinating read. It manages to capture and explain the fundamental difference in the experience of nursing in the community to that of hospital nursing, something that I, as both health visitor and lecturer, feel is not always sufficiently emphasized. Its scope is broad, encompassing over a century of social history, health care and social policy. There are two sections. Part I searches for a meaning and purpose of 'community nursing.' The authors argue that community nursing has always been at the front line in the maintenance of 'social order.' This might be through the containment of nineteenth century epidemics, or involvement in recent government initiatives such as 'Sure Start.' They note that the development of community nursing took place and continues to develop, against a background of many discourses including those of motherhood, poverty, welfarism, individualism, and more recently, that of social inclusion. Part II examines in some depth the difficulties experienced by community nurses when responding to the 'complicated web of influences' set out in Part I. The authors ask the question of whether nurses can resolve the (apparent) contradictions of 'care' and 'control' and address such 21st century challenges as the implications for practice of the 'New Publi...
ISBN 0 7619 4140 1.The primary purpose of this book is to help undergraduate students understand how a research dissertation may be formulated. An initial striking feature is that this book is not written with specific reference to nursing research. The book comprises twenty chapters each with a specific focus and progresses in a logical manner. First, the book commences with chapters on the purpose of dissertations and the different types of dissertations that may be written. The intangible aspect of being motivated to commence, carry out and complete a dissertation is considered. Second, formulating a research idea, searching the literature relevant to this idea and thinking about the philosophy to underpin one's study are examined. Third, how to write a research proposal is addressed. Fourth, chapters eleven to sixteen are concerned with research methods. Quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis are examined as is the issue of maintaining ethical integrity within one's study. Finally, chapters seventeen to twenty are concerned with the writing up of a final research report with attention being given to writing style, accurate referencing and dissemination of the report and its findings. In conclusion, this book provides a clear and accurate description of how one may formulate a research report. Indeed, if not in the process of writing a research report, one may still use this book as a general research textbook. Although not written with specific reference to nursing, the content of the book is clearly of relevance to nurses engaged in undergraduate or post graduate research.
