The results showed that the beneficial bacteria increased only by the exercise program indicating an improvement of immune functions and chronic disease management by exercise, while reducing the inflammation and potential variables causing chronic diseases.
PURPOSE:To investigate the effects of six-week HIIT on physiological performance, cognitive function, and blood lipid response in sedentary adults. METHODS: Thirty-six sedentary adults (age 21 ± 1 years; height 1.69 ± 0.08 m; body mass 61 ± 12 kg) were recruited to complete this six-week HIIT study in randomized order. After a familiarization trial, all participants performed a single bout of HIIT a day for six days (1×6HIIT, 12-min at 80 -90%HRmax interspersed with a 1-min recovery), twice bouts of HIIT a day for three days (2×3HIIT, 12-min at 80 -90%HRmax interspersed with a 1-min recovery), or control (Con) condition without training. A single bout of HIIT consists of 3 sessions, each separated by 1-min of rest; each session included four segments. Each whole-body exercise in a segment was done for 30-s at high effort, followed by 15-s of downtime, then repeated. The blood sample, physiological and cognitive tests were estimated before and after six-week HIIT. RESULTS:Maximal oxygen uptake was significantly increased by 7.17% in 2×3HIIT after training, but 1×6HIIT and Con were not significantly different after training (p > .05). The waist, hip, systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, and body fat were not significantly different among three conditions (p > .05), but the waist, hip, and body fat significantly decreased at post-training compared with pre-training in the 1×6HIIT or the 2×3HIIT condition (p < .05). The cognitive performances of word and color were not significantly different among three conditions (p > .05); however, word (pre-training vs. post-training = 125 ± 2 vs. 139 ± 3, p < .05) and color (pre-training vs. post-training = 104 ± 3 vs. 114 ± 4, p < .05) were significantly improved after six-week training. Total cholesterol (TG) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations were significantly decreased by 9.07% and 5.93% in 2×3HIIT respectively at post-training compared with pre-training (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS:The twice bouts of HIIT a day for three days a week throughout six-week training has more benefits improving cardiorespiratory fitness, TG, and LDL-C concentrations of sedentary adults. Thus, we suggested that sedentary adults choose a 2×3HIIT regimen for short-term high-intensity whole-body training to improve their cardiorespiratory fitness and blood lipid profile.
