The article analyses the impact of social stratification and ideological identification on voting behavior in the Brazilian Presidential elections of 2002 and 2006, and, specifically, it identifies the values and attitudes associated with the vote for Lula. The analysis is based on the 2 waves of the ESEB (Brazilian Electoral Study) and it shows that in 2002, the social stratification was not a relevant factor in the explanation of presidential voting, especially the vote for Lula, associated with the self-ideological identification of citizens; in 2006, the situation is the opposite. However, in the 2 presidential campaigns, the vote for Lula is strongly explained by the voter’s identification with the candidate
Based on survey results conducted in the Brazilian Presidential elections of 1989, 1994, 1998 and 2002, and the local election of São Paulo in 1996, the authors analyse the electoral behavior as a result of a strategy pattern made of three possible choices: the vote as an expression of identity with the candidate; as a belief in the candidate´s opposition capacity and as a belief in the candidate´s administrative capacity. The authors point out the link between the vote strategy as an expression of identity with the candidate Luís Inácio da Silva, Lula, in all the period. The article is based on the Brazilian Electoral Study results
This article investigates the convergence of opinions between Brazilian elites and population about the policies of reduction of poverty and inequality. The international literature is divided in two groups, one that affirms opposite visions between elites and mass towards this issue, and one that sustains that the difficulties that democracies face to reach economic and social development lead to a consensus, in which social policies for poverty reduction are critical. The analysis compares the results from CSES-ESEB 2010 to research data came from an elite survey conducted in 2009. The results support the idea that there is a social consensus between elites and general population
