ResumoOs opacificantes são matérias-primas, naturais ou sintéticas, adicionadas às composições cerâmicas para aumentar a opacidade e o grau de brancura dos suportes, engobes e esmaltes. Os opacificantes utilizados no setor cerâmico tem evoluído devido à necessidade de otimizar a relação opacidade/custo. Atualmente os opacificantes mais utilizados são o silicato de zircônio e a alumina. A utilização de ambos opacificantes nas composições cerâmicas depende de vários fatore, entre os quais o custo, o tipo de composição onde é introduzido, a reatividade do opacificantes com a matriz cerâmica, seu índice de refração, o tamanho de partícula, sua composição química e o efeito que produz sobre o comportamento e propriedades cerâmicas. No presente trabalho é realizado um estudo sistemático sobre a influência de diversos fatores sobre a opacificação em suportes e esmaltes de grés porcelânico. Foi estudado o efeito do tamanho de partícula do opacificantes e a quantidade adicionada sobre a brancura e opacidade do material cerâmico, bem como sobre seu comportamento no processo cerâmico e propriedades finais. Ao ensaiar suportes de grés porcelânico foi observado que a redução do tamanho de partícula é muito mais efetiva para opacificar quando se utiliza zircônia do que quando se utiliza alumina. Além disto, para pequenos tamanhos de partícula (d 50 = 0,5 µm) a alumina é dissolvida parcialmente, enquanto que a zircônia permanece estável. No caso dos esmaltes, a principal diferença entre ambos os opacificantes é a elevada refratariedade e rugosidade que a alumina causa em comparação à zircônia.Palavras-chave: opacificante, zircônia, alumina, esmaltes, porcelanato. IntroduçãoO design e estética das placas cerâmicas é uma das características mais valorizadas ao se escolher um material para a decoração de edifícios. Estas propriedades são obtidas pela utilização de pigmentos, naturais ou sintéticos, que são incorporados nos materiais cerâmicos por diferentes procedimentos 1,2 . Para que estes pigmentos desenvolvam cor de forma adequada, em muitos casos é necessário ter um substrato branco, sendo este um dos principais pigmentos utilizados em suportes, esmaltes e engobes.O silicato de zircônio ou zirconita é um dos pigmentos brancos mais utilizados em cerâmica devido a seu elevado índice de refração (1,97) 3 e a sua elevada refratariedade (temperatura de fusão ~2100-2300 °C) 4 . O tamanho de partícula utilizado depende do mecanismo de opacificação utilizado. Quando o mecanismo é o de "partículas inertes" o tamanho de partícula deve ser pequeno para que exista uma maior superfície de interação com a luz. Um dos mais utilizados para suportes de grés porcelânico, esmaltes e engobes é o denominado "five", com um valor de d 50 = 1,8 µm [5][6][7][8] . Existe um segundo mecanismo denominado "devitrificação", utilizado para a fabricação de fritas, no qual se emprega zirconita com tamanho maior (d 50 = 15 µm).
