The present research examined the effects of an activation of God on prosociality in the presence or absence of a belief in God. In 3 studies, participants were primed with either the word GOD or the nonword GUB. Their intention to volunteer for community work (Study 1), donate their organs upon their death (Study 2), and the length of time in which they immersed their hands in ice-cold water (cold-pressor task) for the sake of charity (Study 3) were measured. In all 3 studies, participants who professed to believe in God showed higher prosocial responses when exposed to the God prime as compared with the non-God prime. However, this effect was not found among participants who professed to be nonbelievers. Furthermore, the results were constant across several different religions (i.e., Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, & Theism). Hence, results suggest that a personal belief in God moderates the priming effect of God on prosociality. Moreover, the importance of increasing specificity of the constructs examined and engaging in replications of priming studies are also discussed.
Among many changes influenced by the Internet, interactivity in spaces that promote relationships, entertainment, and businesses can be highlighted. Considering this, Second Life stands out because it is a tridimensional online environment which imitates human real social life. Despite social and commercial influences, Second Life suggests a new format for e-learning. Then, the question of how to explore the facets of an online learning environment may be answered by Flow Theory. Hence, the main objective of this paper is to analyze the most significant antecedent and subsequent relations of the Flow Experience in the Second Life’s educational environment, based on Novak, Hoffman, and Yung (2000). This research used tools from multivariate statistical analysis such as confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. The results confirmed the hypotheses, indicating that there is flow in Second Life’s e-learning environment, with interactive speed, exploratory behavior and telepresence as the most significant constructs detected.
The threat of violent extremism in the Internet age has undoubtedly become one important focus of research, policy, and government bodies all over the world. Understandably, many resources have been invested into counter violent extremism efforts, such as the identification of possible radicalised individuals, and understanding the psychology behind violent extremism. These methods adopt a resistance stance and attempt to prevent violent extremism. However, this chapter argues that resilience is equally, if not more important given the unpredictable nature of violent extremism. The first part examines ‘systems' within a nation such as critical infrastructure and how concepts such as ‘resilient-by-design' can be incorporated to ensure continuity in times of attacks. The second part will explore ‘person' factors of crisis communication, cohesion, and social capital, and how these factors can afford a cohesive society that can overcome the cracks in social order and harmony often caused by violent extremism.
