O Brasil é o maior produtor mundial de cana-de-açúcar, sendo assim o objetivo deste trabalho foi apresentar os impactos econômicos, sociais e ambientais do seu cultivo além de mostrar algumas aplicações dos subprodutos gerados no processo de produção com enfoque na sustentabilidade do setor. Para tanto, a metodologia utilizada foi a revisão da literatura disponível em quatro bases de dados: Scielo, CAPES, Science Direct e Google Scholar sobre o tema. Percebe-se que a indústria sucroalcooleira produz um impacto tanto no setor econômico, social e ambiental. Os subprodutos oriundos do processamento quando bem utilizados podem promover lucros, diminuição dos problemas ambientais e geração de emprego e renda. Porém, é necessário grande investimento tanto do setor público e privado em tecnologias e pesquisas acadêmicas, pois, a utilização dos subprodutos é altamente promissora para o desenvolvimento sustentável permitindo a correta destinação dos resíduos gerados, conduzindo ao caminho promissor do desenvolvimento sustentável.
Este trabalho propôs-se à uma reflexão sobre a importância do apoio financeiro para a pesquisa científica brasileira com produtos naturais. Foi realizada uma revisão da literatura com artigos científicos, leis federais, sites das agências de fomento à pesquisa e portais com assuntos relevantes ao tema. A cadeia de produtos naturais é ampla e com destaque para a aplicação de aplicação na indústria de alimentos, de fármacos e cosméticos. Muitos dos modelos industriais ainda trazem obtenção de matéria-prima e processos antagônicos aos modelos sustentáveis, pois entende-se que além dos produtos serem naturais, toda a cadeia deve ser sustentável, considerando as bases do desenvolvimento econômico, social e ambiental. Esse é um reflexo da mudança de mercado como consequência da conscientização dos consumidores e organizações sobre os aspectos de sustentabilidade, trazendo a luz o debate sobre temas como a Agenda 2030, os Objetivos para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS), o aproveitamento dos recursos naturais, a bioeconomia, sendo todos os assuntos pautados na necessidade de inovação e desenvolvimento. Dessa forma há uma demanda por parte do setor privado em relação a pesquisas aplicada com produtos naturais e para os laboratórios de pesquisas também há oportunidade de obtenção de recursos privados em detrimento aos recursos públicos. Portanto, torna-se fundamental os pesquisadores da linha de pesquisa de produtos naturais conhecerem as opões viáveis de aporte financeiro para darem continuidade às suas linhas de pesquisa, expandir seus grupos de pesquisas e buscarem parcerias com o setor público e privado.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a atividade antibacteriana de nanoemulsão com óleo essencial (OE) de canela (Cinamomum cassia), como antisséptico bucal. Foram desenvolvidas duas formulações de enxaguatório bucal contendo OE de canela para o preparo de nanoemulsões com dois tipos de surfactantes, Tween 80 e lecitina de soja. Os tratamentos foram comparados com a clorexidina (controle) para as Concentrações Inibitórias e Bactericidas Mínimas (CIM e CBM, respectivamente), sinergismo entre os tratamentos e cinética de atividade antimicrobiana contra Streptococcus mutans, além da quantificação da substantividade dos tratamentos. Conjuntamente, foi realizada a caracterização química do OE de canela e a caracterização das nanoemulsões. As nanoemulsões apresentaram atividade antimicrobiana na CIM e CBM de 0,625 mg mL-1 contra o Streptococcus mutans e a clorexidina de 0,01 mg mL-1 e não foi detectado sinergismo entre cada nanoemulsões de OE de canela e a clorexidina. Comparando a eficiência das nanoemulsões com a clorexidina a 0,12%, na quantificação da substantividade, não houve diferença significativa entre os tratamentos.
