SUMMARY:The basic chemical composition and the fatty acid (FA) profile of Uruguayan Colonia cheese, consumed in the Mercosur region, were determined. 24 cheeses from different dairy farms: 10 elaborated in autumn and 14 in spring, were analyzed. Those cheeses are made from cow´s milk, whose diet was composed of 50% pasture system, 25% concentrate, and 25% silage reserves. The cheese making and ripening time were similar. Seasonal differences emerged in the profiles of saturated FA (SFA), unsaturated FA (UFA) and polyunsaturated FA (PUFA). The seasonal comparation of polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) as well as the CLA isomer such as C18:2 t10c12 showed significant differences (p < 0.05). CLA isomer such as C18:2 c9t11, showed no differences (p > 0.05). The atherogenesis index (AI) = 2.21 and thrombogenicity (IT) = 2.84, were calculated and discussed.
Cattle are broadly deemed a source of Coxiella burnetii; however, evidence reinforcing their role in human infection is scarce. Most published human Q fever outbreaks relate to exposure to small ruminants, notably goats. Anti-phase II C. burnetii IgG and IgM were measured by indirect fluorescent antibody tests in 27 farm and veterinary diagnostic laboratory workers to ascertain whether occupational exposure to cattle aborting due to C. burnetii was the probable source of exposure. Four serological profiles were identified on the basis of anti-phase II IgG and IgM titres. Profile 1, characterised by high IgM levels and concurrent, lower IgG titres (3/27; 11.1%); Profile 2, with both isotypes with IgG titres higher than IgM (2/27; 7.4%); Profile 3 with only IgG phase II (5/27; 18.5%); and Profile 4, in which neither IgM nor IgG were detected (17/27; 63.0%). Profiles 1 and 2 are suggestive of recent C. burnetii exposure, most likely 2.5–4.5 months before testing and, hence, during the window of exposure to the bovine abortions. Profile 3 suggested C. burnetii exposure that most likely predated the window of exposure to aborting cattle, while Profile 4 represented seronegative individuals and, hence, likely uninfected. This study formally linked human Q fever to exposure to C. burnetii infected cattle as a specific occupational hazard for farm and laboratory workers handling bovine aborted material.
Introduction: Bovine mastitis is the most common disease affecting the dairy industry, with staphylococci being considered as one of the most significant and prevalent causes. This study aimed to assess the presence of staphylococcal subclinical mastitis (SCM) in Uruguayan dairy farms and to identify Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and non-aureus staphylococci (NAS) in milking cows. In addition, the antibiotic susceptibility of isolated staphylococci was evaluated. Methodology: We tested 546 apparently healthy milking cows from 11 farms for detecting SCM using the California Mastitis Test (CMT). The cows were not treated with antibiotics. CMT-positive samples were cultured, and colonies compatible with Staphylococcus spp. were further identified through molecular techniques. The susceptibility of the Staphylococcus spp. isolates against thirteen antibiotics was determined using the disk diffusion method. Results: Subclinical staphylococcal mastitis was present in almost all (82%) farms. SA (n = 39) was more common than NAS (n = 9) in the 48 samples tested. Isolates exhibited resistance to one, two, and even three different antibiotics. Resistance to penicillin was the most frequent among SA (23/39) and NAS (4/9). No staphylococci isolates exhibited resistance to cefoxitin, vancomycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, erythromycin, or clindamycin. Conclusions: Staphylococcal SCM is one of the most common diseases in Uruguayan dairy farms. SA was the prevalent pathogen, however SA and NAS mastitis coexisted in many farms. NAS were identified and its distribution was similar to other countries. Penicillin had the highest and most frequent percentage of resistance.
ABSTRACT. Records of in vitro susceptibility tests performed between 2008 and 2015 were retrospectively reviewed in order to evaluate the dynamic profiles of possible changes in antimicrobial resistance of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from milk samples of cows with subclinical mastitis from 12 different Uruguayan Provinces. The results of 1,631 isolates tested by disk diffusion technique for susceptibility to penicillin and erythromycin were analysed. The possible tendency or changes in the behaviour of this pathogen against penicillin and erythromycin in the 8 year period was evaluated using the chi-square tests for trend and the homogeneity. The highest rate of resistance was observed for penicillin (36.9% in 2010), while erythromycin showed a resistance rate significantly lower (5.7% in 2015). The test for trend showed a significant trend towards decreased resistance to penicillin, whereas for erythromycin an increased resistance trend was observed. The determination of the scope of the problem is essential for the formulation and monitoring of effective response to anti-microbial resistance (AMR). Antibiotic assessment in Uruguay is now being reviewed with the objective of limiting antibiotics prescription to professionals trained to select a successful therapy, choosing the appropriated drug and treatment duration according each situation. To generate knowledge on the magnitude and tendency of the AMR problem using country-specific information must be a priority.Key words: Staphylococcus aureus, mastitis, antibiotics, Uruguay. RESUMEN.Los registros de las pruebas de susceptibilidad in vitro realizadas entre 2008 y 2015 fueron revisados retrospectivamente con el fin de evaluar los perfiles dinámicos de posibles cambios en la resistencia antimicrobiana de Staphylococcus aureus aislados de muestras de leche de vacas con mastitis subclínica de 12 provincias uruguayas. Se analizaron los resultados de 1.631 aislamientos mediante la técnica de difusión en disco para la susceptibilidad a penicilina y eritromicina. La posible tendencia o cambios en el comportamiento de este patógeno frente a la penicilina y la eritromicina en el período de ocho años se evaluó utilizando las pruebas de chi-cuadrado para la tendencia y la homogeneidad. La mayor tasa de resistencia se observó para penicilina (36,9% en 2010), mientras que eritromicina mostró una tasa de resistencia significativamente menor (5,7% en 2015). El resultado de la prueba de tendencia fue significativo, indicando una disminución de la resistencia a la penicilina, mientras que para la eritromicina se observó una tendencia a aumentar la resistencia. Determinar el alcance del problema es esencial para la formulación y el seguimiento de la respuesta eficaz a la resistencia antimicrobiana (RAM).
