The coastal strandline and sand-dune vegetation of Greece has been reviewed. All published releve´s available were collected and classified using numerical methods (TWINSPAN). The communities studied belong to three classes, one for strandline vegetation (C a k il ete a m ari ti m ae), and two for sand-dune vegetation (A m m o p h il ete a a n d C is to -M icr o m er ie tea). A hierarchical syntaxonomic overview is given. The following communities and associations were distinguished: S a lso lo -M att h io let u m t ri cu sp id a tae , C a k il o -X a n th iet u m str u m a rii , A t rip li ci h as tat ae-A tr ip l icet u m ta tar ica e, S als o l o -E u p h o r b ie tu m p ep l is , S a lso lo k a li -C ak il etu m m arit im a e, E l y m o -Z y g o p h y l le tu m a lb i , Community of Otanthus maritimus, Community of Eryngium maritimum, E ry n g io -S p o ro b o le tu m v i rgi n ic i, C y p er o m u cro n at i-A g ro p y re tu m ju n cei , M ed i cag in i m ar in a e-A m m o p h i le tu m , L im o n io g rae ci-Tri p la ch n e tu m n it en t is , E u p h o rb io -Sil en e tu m n ic aee n si s, E p h ed ero d is tach y ae -S i len etu m su b co n ic ae, C ru ci an e ll etu m m ar it im ae , E ly m e tu m sab u lo si, S arc o p o t eri o sp i n o si -C e n ta u re etu m s p in o sa e and community of Artemisia campestris and Leymus racemosus. Twenty-nine subassociations have been distinguished. Species composition is presented in 10 synoptic tables. For each syntaxon the location where the releve´s have been made is listed.Attention is paid to ecological requirements and geographical distribution. The characteristic and differential species for each syntaxon are also described. Human impact and conservation of coastal communities is discussed.Keywords: C ak ile tea , A m m o p h ile tea , C i sto -M ic ro m e rie tea , East Mediterranean syntaxonomic overview, classification, vegetation synopsis, TWINSPAN.
