PurposeThis study characterizes the scenario of emerging countries (ECs) – “Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS)” concerning digital transformation and its association with the Industry 4.0 (I4.0) value creation system. For such, the authors developed a discussion paper based on content analysis of 857 journals in business administration, describing in a proposed framework the institutionalization “BRICS” policies that nurture global competitiveness among ECs and development needs to catching up.Design/methodology/approachData from 16 official documents of government, ministries and economic studies were analyzed by applying Atlas TI contrasting theory of 875 papers to develop and discuss the framework. Content analysis showed research gaps, technological needs and governance to enable firms to sustain competitive advantages applying I4.0 value creation system. Results converged into a microfoundation of the agile journey of a digital transformation to global organizations in between BRICS.FindingsThis paper's central question is to understand: How can organizations achieve a sustainable I4.0 value creation system adopting digital transformation in “BRICS”? The reduced transaction costs driven by platforms and ecosystems orchestration and the related or integrated multiple level sources of knowledge could speed benefits of domestic firms and subsidiaries of global organizations. Research gaps could be understood by a new combination of resources and knowledge, exploiting technologies and, also, the discussion of social economic relevance of I4.0.Research limitations/implicationsBecause of the complexity and the novelty of the framework, further studies could be discussed by its elements. New structures and paths for alternative strategic factors may be proposed in the future with the inclusion of new relationships in the adoption of platform business models and ecosystems. Future studies should consider digital knowledge-based assets attained to economic activities across national boundaries; data analytics or data-driven technology adoption and their effects on global attractiveness.Practical implicationsThe paper implicates in evaluating whether dynamic capabilities subsidize performance propitiating the catching up with a focus on the I4.0 system and digital transformation management journey. The proposed framework demonstrates the benefits of digital transformation by enabling strategic capabilities, making efforts to reduce a lack of research paths concerning the policy attributes that define the platform use strategy from an architectural standpoint and its benefits.Social implicationsThe particularities of turning either an I4.0 global organization or a digital organization operate in various environments, allowing access to the activities' digital context. Social implications concerning digital resources as strategic accelerators are determined by the BRICS peculiarities, such as social behavior, consumerism or communication pattern, leadership and workforce skills. Finally, political aspects and interference in the economy are deployed in society what must be considered.Originality/valueThis paper proposes a conceptual framework to better understand whether the heterogeneity of resources could explain I4.0 and digital configurations, while new platforms have driven features in global industrial environments and ecosystems. The seizing opportunities in these countries and sense-making use of platforms and orchestration of ecosystems are found as the critical topics being the main value of this important discussion.
This research aimed to investigate how the governance structure of innovation habitats may contribute to the development of innovation in resident companies. An exploratory study was conducted in INOVAPARQ and CELTA incubator, in Brazil. The empirical contexts were investigated by applying qualitative method with NVivo software. Critical success factors of governance were found: managerial relationships with different stakeholders; national and international training networks; and boosted resident companies monitoring by specific assessment tools. It was concluded that these factors are crucial to the innovation process of resident companies mostly by creating new products and services; sharing of inter-company knowledge; and motivating employees to work in a creative environment.
Waste management has undergone many changes since the end of the 20th century therefore, green products have gained increasing attention. This paper aims to understand the association between the use of labels to communicate a sustainable image by green marketing and their impact on consumer perception. Qualitative research was carried out, with a theoretical and empirical nature. No studies were identified analyzing the relationship between the communication of green marketing, aimed at the circular economy, by the environmental labeling perspective, being this groundedness the main contribution for studies improvement in the research field. Then, a sample of 60 product packages in 15 segments and 50 different brands was used. We found that the way the manufacturer seeks to communicate about the potential for reuse or recycling of the material used in the packaging can generate doubt in the consumer. Results demonstrate that no standard symbology is used in environmental labeling. Purchasing decisions would be influenced by information on environmental or ethical aspects of products. Studying how the industry labels its products and offers them to the consumer is certainly a way to understand the degree of maturity and how much progress can be made in terms of consumption and sustainable production. There is still a low relationship between the explored theories and their effective use in environmental labeling, so it is suggested to deepen this gap in future works. Although there is research on environmental labeling, few seek to identify in the field how the concepts and standards have been effectively applied. This study demonstrates that it is still necessary to advance both in terms of consumer understanding of what the labels say, and in aspects of standardization of labels by the industry.
Purpose: This study aims to understand how organizations accelerate a digital transformation (DT) and leverage innovations in digital services in the modus operandi of dynamic capabilities (DC) development. DT provides an agile resource mobilization in relation to the operational flexibility and to the technological and informational capabilities. Originality/value: This study contributes with a new theoretical-applied perspective on agility as a necessary competence for DC development, being investigated in an emerging country, in this case, Brazil. The development of DC that are suitable for DT becomes critical for capturing opportunities in the dynamic digital environment. Design/methodology/approach: Forty companies in the Brazilian territory were investigated in order to explore the relation between DC and DT, focusing on agility and based on the logic of literal and theoretical replication of case studies. The theoretical framework was applied to investigate companies from three empirical fields (energy, automotive, and digital services), within the triangulation of secondary sources, management reports and internal documents. Findings: The cases analyzed provide evidence that agility does not presuppose strong DC in sensing, as it depends on services’ maturity. We highlight the mediation of the applied use of intangible resources and digitized assets that speed up the seizing and transformation of the business. In the context of digital assets in intensive environments, we propose that DT strategy may be used with analytical intelligence and agility by integrating technological processes.
RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo é compreender como organizações agilizam a transformação digital (TD) e impulsionam inovações em serviços digitais no modus operandi do desenvolvimento de capacidades dinâmicas (CD). A TD propicia a mobilização de recursos ágeis relativos à flexibilidade operacional e às capacidades tecnológica e informacional. Originalidade/valor: O estudo contribui ao apresentar uma nova perspectiva teórico-aplicada sobre a agilidade como uma competência necessária ao desenvolvimento de CD, sendo investigada em país emergente, no caso, o Brasil. O desenvolvimento de CD adequadas à TD torna-se crítico para a captura de oportunidades no dinâmico ambiente digital. Design/metodologia/abordagem: Foram investigadas 40 empresas no território brasileiro no sentido de explorar a relação entre CD e a TD, com enfoque na agilidade e com base na lógica de replicação literal e teórica de estudos de casos. O framework teórico foi a base de validação do raciocínio aplicado em empresas de três campos empíricos (energia, automotivo e serviços digitais), com triangulação de fontes secundárias, relatórios gerenciais e documentos internos. Resultados: Resultados evidenciam que, entre os casos analisados, a agilidade não pressupõe CD fortes em sensing, pois depende da maturidade em servitização. Destacou-se a mediação do uso aplicado de recursos intangíveis e ativos digitizados, que atribuem velocidade ao seizing e à transformação do negócio. No contexto de ambientes intensivos em ativos digitais, propõe-se que a estratégia de TD seja realizada com inteligência analítica e agilidade na integração de processos tecnológicos.
