Palavras-chave: adubação orgânica, agroecologia, cultivo orgânico, macroalgas arribadas ABSTRACT Macroalgae occur attached to rocks, being removed by tides and accumulating in some beaches, constituting the so-called beach-cast macroalgae. The present study analyzed the utility of this material as soil fertilizer through observation in lettuce plants development in two experiments, carried out in spring/2011 and in winter/2012. In each experiment, 825 plants were cultivated under three treatments: without fertilization, with ordinary fertilization and with macroalgae fertilization. The planting was done in three hotbeds and each week, it was randomly collected 25 plants (spring/2011) or 20 plants (winter/2012). The collected plants were washed, oven dried at 60 o C for 48 hours. From the mean of dry weight, the treatments were compared each week, using Tukey Test. The mean of dry weight was utilized to calculate the relative growth rate (RGR, % day -1 ) for the three treatments along seven weeks in spring/2011 and eight weeks in winter/2012. The RGRs of the three treatments showed similar patterns throughout the time in both experiments; however, the plants cultivated with macroalgae fertilization obtained higher values of RGRs and dry weights than the two other treatments in spring/2011. In winter/2012, the ordinary fertilization showed higher mean dry weights while the tr...
