The two ways of Ricardo's principle of comparative advantages and the gold standard: a critical essay. This article critically resumes Ricardo's principle of comparative advantages pointing out internal coherence problems that have been neglected by the specialized literature. First, long-lasting disequilibria observed in the balance of trade seem incompatible with the idea that these disequilibria are caused by technical advances that change relative prices. Second, comparative advantages do not seem to work in an economy with a universally accepted commodity-money. Finally, the contradiction between the gold standard mechanisms, ruled by Smith's "Law of Reflux", and the quantitative theory of money, which is a necessary condition for the "second way" of the theory of comparative advantages.
Palavras-chave: Economia marxista; Valor (Economia); Distribuição (Teoria econômica); Teoria trabalhista do valor. AbstractThe law of value as the foundation of the prices The law of value as the foundation of the prices The law of value as the foundation of the prices The law of value as the foundation of the prices This article shows that the law of value is axiomatic and constitutes the necessary foundation of the prices of production. Giving up this foundation means to break with the self-found principle of science, to abandon the unifying principle of classical economics in favor of unsystematic theories based on ad hoc hypotheses and to give up on a general theory of market economies. The neoRicardian proposal to determine prices and the profit rate directly from "technical coefficients" and the real wage omits the length of the working-day and the intensity of the labor process, concealing the sociologic contents of those variables.
AbstractThis article examines, albeit in a synthetic fashion, the Introduction to the Grundrisse, comparing it not only to other texts written by Marx, but also to Hegel, in order to clarify some essential aspects of Marxist dialectics. In particular, it discusses the dichotomy method of inquiry x method of exposition; the differentia specifica of Marxian Hegelian dialectic in relation to Aristotelian logic; the question of form and content; the relationship between understanding and dialectic reason and between formal syllogism and dialectic syllogism; the Marxian critique of Hegelian idealism; the reasons why "the anatomy of man is the key to the anatomy of the ape"; as well as the limitations of the Introduction to the Grundrisse in the face of other dimensions of Marxist dialectics.
Abstract The working mechanisms of the "gold standard": a critical viewThis article analyses the workings of the gold standard. It points out the inconsistencies of the traditional view, based on Hume's price-specie flow mechanism, which ignores Adam Smith's "law of reflux" and the properties of a commodity money regime. Avoiding the aprioristic and excessively stylized character of the majority of analyses, the study discusses the adjustment mechanisms based on real economic history. This makes the issue easier to understand, as well as more concrete and less disconnected from effective reality, which, as recognized by many authors, is very difficult to explain from an orthodox perspective. Keywords: Gold standard; Law of reflux; Hume's price-specie flow mechanism; Balance of payment adjustment; Commodity money. JEL F41, N1.
