Objetivo. Determinar el nivel de conocimiento de la enfermedad, estilo de vida y su relación con el control metabólico del paciente con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 de la UMF. No. 39 IMSS, Centro, Tabasco. Método. Se realizó un estudio de tipo observacional transversal y analítico en una muestra de 200 pacientes con diabetes. Para tal fin se diseñó y aplicó un cuestionario para evaluar el conocimiento y estilo de vida en el paciente. Se empleó estadística descriptiva y analítica, expresada a través de tablas y gráficas. Para relacionar las variables de interés, se utilizó la X2 de Pearson. Se empleó el programa SPSS versión 15.0. Resultados. La media de edad de los pacientes fue de 55 años, el promedio de años de estudios fue de 6, predominaron las mujeres con 59.5%, de ocupación labores del hogar el 44.5%, con una media de 10 años de evolución con la enfermedad; el nivel de conocimiento fue insuficiente en el 87% (n=174), al relacionar el nivel de conocimiento y el control metabólico se obtuvo una x2 de 4.735 y una p =0.03; el 92% de los pacientes (n=184) presentan un estilo de vida no saludable, al relacionar el estilo de vida y el control metabólico se obtuvo una X2 de 6.922 y una p =0.009 estadísticamente significativa. Conclusiones. Los pacientes que tienen un nivel de conocimiento insuficiente y presentan estilos de vida no saludables, tuvieron un inadecuado control metabólico. Es de vital importancia que el personal de salud brinde una educación efectiva y recalcar la necesidad de aplicar en su vida diaria un estilo de vida saludable.
