Este estudo tem como objetivo investigar a aderência existente entre a formação e a demanda do mercado de trabalho do profissional contábil na Região Metropolitana de Porto Alegre-RMPA. Para tanto, discute, em seu referencial teórico, a educação contábil e o mercado de trabalho para contadores. Além disso, apresenta o resultado de pesquisas já realizadas sobre o tema. Mediante a utilização de técnicas de Estatística Descritiva Bivariada e Multivariada, analisa 939 ofertas públicas de emprego coletadas no período de janeiro a setembro de 2007 no jornal Zero Hora e no site de recolocação profissional Manager, além das grades curriculares e caracterizações das disciplinas ministradas em nove cursos de graduação em Ciências Contábeis de Instituições de Ensino Superior situadas na RMPA. O Coeficiente T de Correlação Posto-Ordem de Kendall, calculado para verificar a correlação entre os rankings de prioridades de cada IES e do mercado de trabalho, aponta que a um nível de significância de 5% apenas uma instituição de ensino está alinhada ao mercado, no que diz respeito à ordem de importância atribuída a cada grupo de competências. A Análise de Correspondência Múltipla também evidencia certo distanciamento entre as demandas do mercado e a oferta das IES. Os resultados indicam que, embora as instituições de ensino contemplem em suas grades curriculares disciplinas voltadas ao desenvolvimento e aprimoramento das competências requeridas pelo mercado, existe certo desalinhamento em função do foco dado pelos cursos, uma vez que os empregadores ainda requerem profissionais com conhecimentos de contabilidade societária e fiscal, enquanto as IES desenvolvem um perfil mais amplo e gerencial.
