Introduction: Psoriasis is a common, inflammatory skin disease of which etiopathogenesis is still not explained clearly, however in which trace elements and oxidative stress are considered to play a role. Aim: To evaluate the serum trace element and oxidative stress levels in patients diagnosed with psoriasis. Material and methods: A total of 87 psoriasis patients and 60 healthy subjects were included in the study. Serum sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) levels, oxidative stress parameters, ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), catalase (CAT), myeloperoxidase (MPO) and ferroxidase (FOX) activity and an inflammatory marker, C-reactive protein (CRP), were examined in all participants. Results: IMA, IMA/Albumin (IMA/Alb), CAT, Cu, FOX and CRP levels were found to be significantly higher; Se, Zn and albumin levels were significantly lower in the patient group as compared to the control group. No significant difference was found between groups with regard to Na, K, Ca, P, Mg, Fe and MPO levels. Conclusions: Some trace element levels and oxidant-antioxidant balance were changed in psoriasis patients.
Predonation Hb measurements must be performed with accurate, precise, and practical methods. Although the noninvasive POCT method was practical and painless, it had lower levels of specificity and sensitivity, and more false deferral and pass rates than the invasive POCT method. The POCT methods agreeable to the venous method as the reference might be suitable for Hb screening especially for centers of excessive numbers of blood donation.
Oxidative stress occurs in the organism with ischemia due to tourniquet use and subsequent reperfusion. Oxidative stress increases postoperative morbidity. Some Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) perform their anti-inflammatory effects in part by binding or inhibiting their formation of active oxygen radicals at the site of inflammation. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of IV ibuprofen on ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty over oxidative stress parameters. The patients were randomly divided into two groups. Each patient's protocol number, age, sex, body mass index (BMI), additional disease, drug use, tourniquet time, hemoglobin value, additional analgesic requirement and application, adverse reaction development on the first postoperative day were recorded in the research follow-up form. Both groups of patients; before anesthesia, 45 minutes after tourniquet application, 5 minutes after tourniquet lowering, 20 minutes after tourniquet lowering and at 24th-hour post-op; TOS, TAS, paraoxonase, arylesterase, myeloperoxidase, catalase, ceruloplasmin, albumin, IMA, thiol-disulfide balance tests were studied. Statistical analysis of test results was performed. We observed that antioxidants decreased and oxidants increased on the first postoperative day in both groups in patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty. The decrease in antioxidant parameters was higher in IV ibuprofen doses compared to the control group in the case group; these doses indicate that the drug adversely affects the organism in the fight against oxidative stress, which is an undesirable effect. To evaluate this negative effect of IV ibuprofen which
Background: Oxidative damage is of great importance for patients with breast cancer. Thus, studies were performed to identify the relationship between breast cancer and oxidative stress biomarkers. Objectives: In this study, our aim was to find out the oxidative and antioxidant status, serum thiol-disulphide levels in subjects with breast cancer. Methods: This study was conducted between March and June 2018 with 82 control subjects (aged between 32-67 years) and 127 breast cancer patients (aged between 27-66 years) (p=0.058) in Selcuk University Faculty of Medicine, Konya, Turkey. Serum myeloperoxidase (MPO), catalase, prolidase were analyzed with kinetic spectrophotometric and thiol-disulphide, ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), ceruloplasmin were detected by colorimetric methods. Results: Serum levels of catalase [199.3 (16.4-489.9) vs 81.6 (18.2-322.9) (kU/L)], MPO [124±28 vs 101±31 U/L], disulphide [25 (11-61) vs 18 (2-41) µmol/L], IMA [0.66 (0.31-3.30) vs 0.62 (0.19-1.31) absorbance unit (ABSU)] and prolidase levels [2217±538 vs 1456±401 U/L] were higher in patients than control subjects (For all p<0.001 except for IMA p=0.031). Native thiol [342±60 vs 391±52 µmol/L] and total thiol levels [396±56 vs 430±52 µmol/L] were lower in patients compared with the control group (For all p<0.001). Conclusions: Levels of serum thiol/disulphide and prolidase might be reliable indicators for determining oxidative status in certain patient populations.
