Esse artigo trata da análise dos processos de “sincretismo” e “anti-sincretismo” presentes na formação do sistema simbólico da Capoeira Angola contemporânea. Tais fenômenos são entendidos aqui como estratégias de mobilização de elementos simbólicos advindos de diferentes sistemas religiosos que se fundem ou se separam criando representações de “pureza” e “mestiçagem” ou “legitimidade” e “deslegitimidade”. O artigo termina com a análise de conflitos entre angoleiros evangélicos (de igrejas pentecostais) e candomblecistas evidenciando que discursos associados à intolerância religiosa são também mobilizados dentro da linguagem simbólica da Capoeira Angola o que, visto de uma perspectiva outra, pode apontar para a existência de questionamentos a respeito do “ser negro” na Capoeira Angola.
Uma etnografia sobre a transnacionalização do Grupo de Capoeira Angola Irmãos Guerreiros (GCAIG) nos conduziu à duas categorias que qualificam diferentes formas de Capoeira: “esporte” e “cultura”. O uso nativo de tais noções remete a existência de disputas no campo da Capoeira que associam “cultura” com um saber tradicional e “esporte” com um saber erudito. Visamos aqui descrever algumas implicações políticas desses usos em dois contextos contemporâneos: Brasil e Portugal. Concluímos que a perspectiva “cultural” ganha força no Brasil gerando espaço para a multiplicidade de saberes tradicionais, enquanto que em Portugal a perspectiva “esportiva” prevalece submetendo grupos de diferentes tradições a uma única forma de organização.
Esse trabalho situa-se dentre aqueles que pretende discutir os vários estilos de masculinidades produzidos em diferentes tipos de lazer ou esportes (Cecchetto, 2004 e Zaluar, 1985). Aqui, será analisado o estilo de masculinidade produzido no contexto de um grupo de capoeira angola da cidade de Londrina. Para tanto, utilizo a abordagem processualista e relacional de Norbert Elias (1993) e de Connel (1998) por entender que tais autores permitem o entendimento do esporte moderno e da masculinidade como construções sociais em constante transformação, estabelecendo inter-relações com os temas do corpo, violência elazer.
