O artigo discute aspectos problemáticos ligados à idéia de racionalidade estratégica desenvolvida no âmbito da teoria dos jogos. Um aspecto especialmente explorado é o fato de que a teoria dos jogos pretende fornecer critérios de escolha racional numa situação de incerteza, característico da chamada interação estratégica, em que os indivíduos tentam antecipar as ações dos outros com os quais interagem por considerar que o alcance de seus objetivos depende também daquelas ações. Ao fazê-lo, entretanto, a teoria normalmente desconsidera o elemento de endogeneidade típico da situação. Argumenta-se aqui que uma abordagem excessivamente racionalista da interação estratégica, e da incerteza que lhe é característica, é danosa à própria solução racional da situação, e que melhor seria, portanto, buscar uma cooperação intelectual com o programa de pesquisa institucionalista. Reconhece-se que este programa não é monolítico, abrigando diferentes visões, uma das quais voltada para dar conta das instituições em termos da escolha racional dos indivíduos. A linha institucional desenvolvida neste artigo, contudo, deriva de diálogo interdisciplinar com a Filosofia, em particular com a tradição da filosofia social que reflete sobre a questão "o que podemos conhecer?", a partir de uma visão peculiar sobre o mundo social, na qual a racionalidade individual desempenha função limitada.
