Esta tesis tiene como objetivo realizar un estudio anatómico y farmacológico de Schinus lentiscifolius para asegurar la correcta identificación de esta especie y validar científicamente su uso etnobotánico como antiespasmódica y para el tratamiento de trastornos del sistema nervioso central Se hicieron los estudios botánicos morfo-anatómicos de gran importancia en la identificación de drogas vegetales y la caracterización de los posibles principios activos para ahondar en el estudio de los mecanismos de acción. El objetivo farmacológico fue estudiar las propiedades mediante experimentos “ex vivo” en intestino, útero y vejiga aislados de rata, y su actividad en modelos “in vivo” de conducta. Se realizaron curvas concentración-respuesta contráctil (CCR) en intestino con carbacol (Cbl) y histamina, en útero con Cbl, oxitocina y serotonina (5HT) y en vejiga con Cbl, en ausencia y presencia de diferentes concentraciones de la tinturas de S.lentiscifolius. Como resultados se obtuvo que la tintura de las hojas de S.lentiscifolius se comportó como antiespasmódica intestinal, uterina y vesical, inhibiendo en modo no competitivo a las CCR de los diversos agonistas. En cuanto a los estudios de comportamiento, el aceite esencial extraído de sus hojas exhibió un efecto sedante en el test de campo abierto en ratones; tanto la infusión como la tintura mostraron actividad ansiolítica en el test de supresión de alimento; y los tres extractos mostraron un efecto antidepresivo similar a la clomipramina en el test de suspensión de cola en ratones. En su composición fue detectada la presencia de flavonoides como rutina e isoquercitrina y el esterol β-sitosterol. Se identificaron 57 compuestos volátiles en su aceite esencial, de los cuales 20 se informan por primera vez. En conclusión, esta tesis demuestra la actividad antiespasmódica y a nivel de sistema nervioso central de las hojas de Schinus lentiscifolius, y caracteriza su perfil botánico y fitoquímico, nunca antes reportado en bibliografía científica, contribuyendo a validar su uso fitoterapéutico.
