AbstractThe objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the stage of maturation of peach and guava fruits in capturing Anastrepha fraterculus male and female adults in the field. Weekly samples were taken with McPhail traps and two food baits during 48 hours when peach fruits were at the stages green, mature and post-harvest and guava fruits were green, maturing, and mature. The baits were composed of grape fruit (25%) and hydrolyzed protein (5%). The traps were placed at different sides of the orchard. The mean number of captures per bait, sides in the orchard (North, South, East, and West), and periods were compared. In green peach fruits the mean number of captured males was higher (H = 4.81, p < 0.05) than in hydrolyzed protein but when the fruits were ripe the number of captures were similar in both baits (H = 0.4403, p > 0.05). At post-harvest, more females were captured with grape juice (H = 5.1, p < 0.05). The population peak was verified in late November, one week after the harvest. In guava, the mean numbers of individuals captured with grape juice were similar among phases (H = 1,71, p>0.05); when protein was used, that number was higher at the ripening and mature phases (H = 27.97, p < 0.05). The mean number of females was higher in hydrolyzed protein (U = 35.5, p<0.05). The population peak occurred at the end of March. Our results suggest that bait attractiveness is dependent upon tree species and fructification phase.
Chickpea is a commercially exploited crop on a relatively new scale in Brazil, that is why, little information on the main pests is available. Mostly caterpillars showing Heliothinae morphological characteristics have emerged in production areas. In order to point out the species of these insects in chickpea fields produced in the Federal District and the surrounding areas, this study aimed to determine the morphological and molecular identification of these invertebrates in order to assist producers in pest management in a more sustainable way. Caterpillars were hand-collected directly from the plants in six sites and the moth collection was collected using light traps in four sites, monthly, in 2017 and 2018. The morphological identification was made through the adult insect genitalia and the subsequent molecular identification was performed using the cytochrome oxidase I enzyme with the quantitative PCR technique, which resulted in the development of an efficient and low-cost DNA extraction protocol to be used in samples under unfavorable storage conditions. Morphological and molecular studies showed the presence of Helicoverpa armigera, Helicoverpa zea, Chloridea virescens and Chloridea subflexa, with a predominance of Chloridea virescens in chickpea plants. Chloridea subflexa was verified for the first time feeding on chickpeas in Brazil.
