A segregação socioespacial existe desde a antiguidade, marcando a civilização mundial e perpetuando o status quo daqueles que possuem uma posição social privilegiada. Em muitas localidades, a construção do espaço urbano tem acontecido de forma a incentivar essa segregação, planejando cidades que mantem essas duas parcelas da população afastadas, e fornecendo infraestrutura e serviços em níveis diferentes, de acordo com os interesses dos agentes do espaço. Em Boa Vista, capital do estado brasileiro de Roraima, a segregação social pode ser observada no contraste de realidades entre a zona leste – onde se concentra a classe média e alta – e a zona oeste – marcada por assentamentos ilegais e programas de habitação social. Dessa forma, o artigo tem como objetivo principal comparar a realidade social vivida na zona leste e na zona oeste da capital de Roraima, identificando as diferentes formas de segregação social e entendendo o papel do planejamento urbano nesse processo. A metodologia adotada para a pesquisa se baseou no levantamento bibliográfico, buscando fundamento teórico sobre os termos utilizados, e na comparação entre a paisagem local e os indicadores sociais das duas áreas, através de observações em campo e pesquisa documental.
