Os sistemas de liberação de fármacos são parte integrante da investigação farmacêutica. A maioria dos sistemas de liberação oral de fármacos é baseada em matrizes poliméricas. Nas duas décadas passadas, as matrizes hidrofílicas tornaram-se muito populares na formulação de formas farmacêuticas de liberação modificada.
