The objective of this study was to determine an empirical mathematical model to estimate leaf area of different soybean cultivars from leaf dimensions, with emphasis on modern and currently used soybean cultivars in the Rio Grande do Sul State.
ABSTRACT PLANT SPACING IN MONOCROPPING AND INTERCROPPING OF CASSAVA AND MAIZE: GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT, AND YIELDThe objective of this study was to quantify the growth, development, and yield of cassava and maize in different plant spacings in monocropping and intercropping systems, considering two sowing dates of maize. The experiment was carried out in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. The cassava variety RS 13 was planted on September 27, 2005. The maize variety BRS Missões was sown on two dates: November 2, 2005 and November 29, 2005. The experimental design was a complete randomized blocks with 12 treatments and three replications. Growth (plant height and leaf area), development (phyllochron, final leaf number and duration of developmental phases), and yield parameters of both crops were measured. Thermal accumulation (assuming a base temperature of 14 °C for cassava and 10 °C for maize) of some developmental phases and the phyllochron were calculated. Growth and development were not affected by plant spacing in both monocropping and intercropping. The highest land use efficiency was obtained by intercropping cassava and maize, with cassava planted in a double row spacing of 1.6 x 0.5 x 0.6 m and maize in a single row spaced 0.8 x 0.21m or two rows of maize spaced 0.4 x 0.42m between the double rows of cassava, with maize sown on cassava emergence.
Ten advanced clones from the Potato Genetics and Breeding Program of the Federal University of Santa Maria, and two cultivars (Asterix and Macaca) were evaluated. The following were all determined: number of accumulated leaves on the main stem; final number of leaves; phyllochron; evolution of the green-leaf area index; maximum leaf-area index; phase duration in days for planting to emergence, for emergencence to tuber initiation, tuber initiation to start of senescence, and emergence to start of senescence; tuber fresh and dry matter. There was a variation in phyllochron, final leaf number and evolution of the leaf-area index as a function of genotype, for each growing season. Comparing the spring and fall crops, and excluding the planting to emergence phase, phase duration in the development cycle of the potato was generally lower for the autumn crop. It was found that phase durations for emergence to tuber initiation, and tuber initiation to the start of senescence, determine tuber productivity. Except for the SJSM 03478-37 clone, advanced clones present a high tuber yield and good adaptation to the two cropping seasons in the subtropical environment of Rio Grande do Sul
