The effects of the magnitude of nonverbal consequences, monitoring, and social consequences on instructionfollowing were evaluated. Twenty-four undergraduates were exposed to a matching-to-sample procedure. The undergraduates underwent four experimental phases that differed regarding the presence or absence of the observer and the correspondence or non-correspondence of the instructions with the nonverbal contingency. In Experiments 1 and 2, the magnitudes of the nonverbal consequences were manipulated, and in Experiment 3, the effects of verbal reprimands on instruction-following were evaluated. The results revealed that alterations in the magnitudes of nonverbal consequences did not influenced the performances of the participants and that monitoring increased the probability that the participants would follow the instructions but not to an extent sufficient to maintain performance when the consequences did not correspond to the nonverbal contingency. The inclusion of verbal reprimands was necessary to achieve this effect. These results support the proposition that social control is important for maintaining instruction-following.
Palavras-chave: observação; Behaviorismo Radical; Análise do Comportamento; operacionismo; positivismo lógico. On Observation as a Methodological Procedure in Behavior Analysis: Logical Positivism, Operationism and Radical BehaviorismABSTRACT -Behavior Analysis adopts two distinct viewpoints about observation as a methodological procedure. In the experimental analysis, it tends to accept only the description of the functional relations among observable variables. In interpretive analysis, however, it infers functional relations among observable and unobservable variables. The radical behaviorist stance about this topic becomes clearer when examined from the influence of operationism over Psychology, especially in the 30's and 40's. This paper aims to accomplish such an examination, based on the specialized literature about the topic and on Skinner's texts. It concludes that the analysis of private events proposed by Skinner: (1) has an interpretive nature; (2) refers, partly at least, to publicly unobservable events; (3) in some measure, employs introspection as a method; (4) to a certain extent, makes inferences about the private world of the other. Keywords: observation; Radical Behaviorism; Behavior Analysis; operationism; logical positivism.1 Endereço para correspondência: UFPR, Departamento de Psicologia.
ABSTRACT John B. Watson, Methodological Behaviorist? To attribute titles or qualities to theoretical proposals is always a difficult task, and unhappily, it is rarely done carefully. This article intends to evaluate the characterizations of John B. Watson's writings as an emblem of the methodological behaviorism movement. The paper presents four conceptions of methodological behaviorism and discusses Watson's commitment to these views, in the light of his own writings. The paper then suggests that often, the expression Methodological Behaviorism could not be applied to Watson's writings, and when it can, it is adequate only to his initial texts and without implying the philosophical problems traditionally attributed to this characterization: the inherent problems of body-mind dualism. As a conclusion, the paper indicates some consequences of this mischaracterization. Keywords: Methodological Behaviorism; ontology; epistemology.
