Um dos argumentos em favor da economia compartilhada é a sua associação a uma possível contribuição para um desenvolvimento e consumo mais sustentáveis. Nesse sentido, frequentemente, o consumo colaborativo tem sido visto com potencial para atender às necessidades humanas de uma forma menos danosa e mais sustentável (econômica, social e ambiental). Nessa perspectiva, uma orientação da economia compartilhada associada aos empreendimentos empresariais, naturalmente, seria a sustentabilidade do negócio. Esse trabalho relaciona os conceitos de sustentabilidade e economia compartilhada, e analisa como as iniciativas que se incluem nessa nova economia se relacionam com o viés sustentável dos negócios. Como estratégia metodológica, foram listadas, categorizadas e analisadas diversas atividades de empreendimentos ao redor do mundo, com base no discurso dessas iniciativas buscando compreender como elas se apresentam enquanto estratégias de negócio. Os resultados permitiram concluir que embora exista algum grau de relação entre a Economia compartilhada e o Desenvolvimento Sustentável, seja na sua dimensão ambiental, social ou de uso coletivo, limitações e dificuldades foram evidenciadas como, por exemplo, o ceticismo em direção a modelos alternativos aos empreendimentos puramente capitalistas, aparentemente, ainda muito incipientes.
