Introdução: Tanto a Leishmaniose Visceral (LV) quanto a AIDS são graves problemas de saúde pública do Brasil, devido à suscetível geografia do país e à frequente assintomatologia de ambas as doenças. A coinfecção Leishmania/HIV é uma condição emergente devido à sobreposição territorial das duas patologias e vem ganhando atenção devido à sua diversidade clínica e pouca eficácia dos tratamentos convencionais. Objetivo: Compreender as características patológicas e sociais que rodeiam o cenário da coinfecção Leishmaniose Visceral/AIDS no Brasil. Material e métodos: Revisão integrativa de literatura com busca na base de dados SCIELO selecionando 4 artigos do período de 2013-2017, na língua portuguesa e usando os descritores “Leishmaniose Visceral”, “AIDS” e “coinfecção” como filtros de pesquisa. Resultados: A apresentação clínica clássica da LV inclui febre, hepatoesplenomegalia, perda de peso e pancitopenia. Onde há circulação dos dois patógenos, a presença de manifestações atípicas da LV envolve quase todos os órgãos. Estas manifestações clínicas principais são semelhantes em paciente HIV positivo ou negativo e os pacientes coinfectados apresentam uma variedade de sinais, encontrando-se parasitos em locais como: trato gastrointestinal, mucosa oral, pele, pleura, pericárdio, linfonodos e trato respiratório. Na coinfecção LV/HIV, os sinais e sintomas atípicos estão associados a uma baixa contagem de células CD4. Muitas vezes, as manifestações atípicas são confundidas com manifestações de outras infecções oportunistas, portanto o diagnóstico dessa condição constitui um desafio. Conclusão: O perfil dos pacientes coinfectados LV-HIV só difere do perfil dos pacientes com LV na forma clássica pela letalidade. A análise patológica evidenciou a interiorização do HIV e a urbanização da LV no Brasil, ocorrendo sobreposições das áreas de transmissão. É necessária a integração das vigilâncias de LV e AIDS, aprimoramento da vigilância da coinfecção LV-HIV e oferta de testes sorológicos para HIV ao grupo de pacientes com leishmanioses.
