O terceiro estudo, N otas etnográfico-lingüísticas sobre a cana-de-açúcar (p. 63-90), registra o fato de os imigrantes alemães adotarem as técnicas de cultivo e industrialização da cana-de-açúcar empregadas no Brasil sem contudo se apropriarem da terminologia portuguesa. Em face das pesquisas já realizadas entre os imigrantes alemães no Rio Grande do Sul, entre as quais destacamos as de H. Bunse, R. Bossmann e C. Oberacker, que não são deconhecidas do A ., surge-nos a pergunta se não seria prematuro concluir pela inexistência de uma "koiné" teuto-rio-grandense depois do estudo, embora rigoroso, de uma só palavra. N ão estaria aqui o A. con cluindo mais do que as premissas lhe permitiriam?
Os contos de Rubem Fonseca, quando surgiram, causaram impacto com a brutalidade do submundo que expressavam. Por mais que numerosos autores tivessem tratado do tema, esses contos impressionavam. Não havia neles uma observação de fora para dentro, não tinham nada a ver com uma anotação "etnográfica", mas, sobretudo, aquela brutalidade era algo cotidiano e corrente, a própria linguagem ficava marcada por ela.De lá para cá, a vida brasileira, em seu conjunto, tornou-se mais brutal e implacável, fatos como os narrados ali passaram a fazer parte de nossa vivência diária e acabamos mais acostumados com eles. (Não será isto mais uma das "ironias da História" de que fala Isaac Deutscher? Como nos parece anacrônica a indignação com que os porta-vozes do establishment reagiram à publicação de Feliz ano novo em 1975! Estar no poder e indignar-se com a brutalidade, na década de 1970...) À medida que a obra de Rubem Fonseca progredia, passava-se a perceber melhor que aquela violência, que tanto impressionara os primeiros leitores, não só era um elemento importante, mas fazia parte de um conjunto muito mais rico e mutável.Lendo-se agora os seis livros de contos publicados até hoje, aparece neles, com muita nitidez, a alternância de vozes de que nos fala o teórico russo Mikhail Bakhtin. Dirigindo esta minha preocupação para os contos de Rubem Fonseca, distingo claramente vozes de barbárie e vozes de cultura. Mas o próprio Bakhtin ensina que as vozes, numa ficção que ele denomina "dialógica",
