The characterization of materials is an area of extreme importance for engineering, it uses a range of instrumental techniques to provide an information bank for material analysis and selection. In the treatment of iron ore the mineralogical characterization is done, almost exclusively, by optical microscopy. However, materials with very fine granulometry, below 4 μm, make their preparation and visualization restricted in this equipment. The present work aims to identify the minerals Hematite, Magnetite and Goethite in samples of tailings from the iron ore processing, employing a Bartington MS3 that evaluates the magnetic susceptibility as a function of the temperature. These measurements make it possible to identify Curie temperatures characteristic of Magnetite (580 °C) and Hematite (675 °C), as well as Goethite's Neel temperature (120 °C). The results showed that the application of the technique is of great value for the identification of the magnetic bearing minerals and the quantification of the magnetic potential of the sample.
TECHNOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF STEEL SLAG AbstractThe global steel industry is seeking, increasingly, technology to make your business more sustainable and competitive production process. One of the great opportunities, already known in this industry is the processing of their waste in co-products for resale in the market. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of two steel slag through a technological characterization. One of the samples is from the electric arc furnace (FEA), and other oxygen converter (Basic Oxygen Furnace -BOF or Linz Donawitz -LD). For the development of the research were used a jaw crusher, a series of Tyler sieves, fluorescence technique of X-ray, microscopy by TIMA-MIRA system. The characterization results helped to identify and quantify the chemical elements and phases present in the slag, which had iron content above 20%, CaO content above 25%, the absence of P and Na and predominance of CaSi, CaFe and ferrous phases
TECHNICAL EVALUATION OF IRON ORE TAILLINGS FOR OBTAINING PELLET AbstractIn the face of international macroeconomic scenario, the mining sector seeks innovative and sustainable solutions for their production processes. One of these solutions is undoubtedly increase the recovery of the mineral present in the waste interest from low metallurgical recovery processing operations. The replacement of natural raw materials by waste opens a range of opportunities to improve the management of non-renewable resources, contributing significantly to sustainable development and business competitiveness. This study aims to define the particle size range, existing in the mud, it is more appropriate to focus and produce pellets, considering the chemical composition, combustion loss, mineralogy and quantity of deleterious elements. For this technological characterization techniques were used, such as size classification (wet sieving and cyclosizer), X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. Our results have identified a granulometric range with high iron content and high degree of release of iron minerals, but with quartz content above a pellet commercial feed. Thus, a particular treatment concentration or blend will be required to chemically tailor the material to subsequently obtain pellets with low cost.
