The dynamics of every classical-mechanics system can be formulated in the reparametrizationinvariant (RI) form (that is we use the parametric representation for trajectories, x = x(τ ), t = t(τ ) instead of x = x(t)). In this pedagogical note we discuss what the quantization rules look like for the RI formulation of mechanics. We point out that in this case some of the rules acquire an intuitively clearer form. Hence the formulation could be an alternative starting point for teaching the basic principles of quantum mechanics. The advantages can be resumed as follows. a) In RI formulation both the temporal and the spatial coordinates are subject to quantization. b) The canonical Hamiltonian of RI formulation is proportional to the quantityH = pt + H, where H is the Hamiltonian of the initial formulation. Due to the reparametrization invariance, the quantityH vanishes for any solution,H = 0. So the corresponding quantum-mechanical operator annihilates the wave function,ĤΨ = 0, which is precisely the Schrödinger equation, ih∂tΨ =ĤΨ. As an illustration, we discuss quantum mechanics of the relativistic particle.
We present and discuss two different possibilities to construct position space version for MagueijoSmolin (MS) doubly special relativity proposal. The first possibility is to start from ordinary special relativity and then to define conserved momentum in special way. It generates MS invariant as well as nonlinear MS transformations on the momentum space, leading to consistent picture for one-particle sector of the theory. The second possibility is based on the following observation. Besides the nonlinear MS transformations, the MS energy-momentum relation is invariant also under some inhomogeneous linear transformations. The latter are induced starting from linearly realized Lorentz group in fivedimensional position space. Particle dynamics and kinematics are formulated starting from the corresponding five-dimensional interval. There is no problem of total momentum in the theory. The formulation admits two observer independent scales, the speed of light, c, and k with dimension of velocity. We speculate on different possibilities to relate k with fundamental constants. In particular, expression of k in terms of vacuum energy suggests emergence of (minimum) quantum of mass.
In this work we explore the connection between group theory and transformations among frames of reference. Starting from the very definition of representations of the abstract Galileo and Lorentz groups over the spacetime, we are naturally led to the Galileo and Lorentz transformations in classical and relativistic regime. In addition to providing an introductory material for advanced topics, such as group theory and its representations, this paper also brings an alternative formulation to the special relativity theory. Keywords: principle of relativity, group theory, special relativity. We construct a new example of the spinning-particle model without Grassmann variables. The spin degrees of freedom are described on the base of an inner anti-de Sitter space. This produces both $\Gamma^\mu$ and $\Gamma^{\mu\nu}$\,-matrices in the course of quantization. Canonical quantization of the model implies the Dirac equation. We present the detailed analysis of both the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian formulations of the model and obtain the general solution to the classical equations of motion. Comparing {\it Zitterbewegung} of the spatial coordinate with the evolution of spin, we ask on the possibility of space-time interpretation for the inner space of spin. We enumerate similarities between our analogous model of the Dirac equation and the two-body system subject to confining potential which admits only the elliptic orbits of the order of de Broglie wave-length. The Dirac equation dictates the perpendicularity of the elliptic orbits to the direction of center-of-mass motion.Comment: Latex, 48 pages, published versio
