INTRODUÇÃO: A epilepsia afeta aproximadamente 2% da população mundial e há pouca divulgação pública de informações sobre o tema, tornando-se importante a apresentação do assunto às comunidades, especialmente no âmbito escolar, onde as crianças permanecem boa parte do seu tempo. O objetivo deste estudo foi aplicar em uma escola municipal de ensino fundamental de Guaianases, um dos bairros mais pobres da periferia do município de São Paulo, questionário sobre epilepsia dentro do projeto "Epilepsia na Escola e a ação do professor" da Associação Brasileira de Epilepsia (ABE). MÉTODOS: O questionário foi elaborado pela ABE envolvendo: conceituação e definição da epilepsia; causas; efeitos das drogas antiepilépticas; atividades da pessoa com epilepsia; e finalmente cuidados durante a crise epiléptica. O questionário com 21 questões foi aplicado antes de aula (fase 1) sobre o tema "Epilepsia para professores", e 2 meses após (fase 2). RESULTADOS: Houve acerto das questões em mais de 70% dos entrevistados na fase 1, em 13 de 21 questões, e na fase 2, em 17 de 21 questões. CONCLUSÕES: Observamos nesse estudo que professores de uma escola de uma das regiões mais pobres do município de São Paulo apresentavam conhecimentos básicos sobre epilepsia, que puderam ser incrementados após aula específica da Associação Brasileira de Epilepsia.
